I thought the point repeatedly made was between personal choices and coercion from a distant authority. We fought a revolution 250 years ago against that kind of tyranny and no American patriot wants anything like it today.

We are talking school and kids, not you at work. This isn't tyranny, it is providing kids with a healthy meal at school. If they don't eat it, they toss what they don't like. As kids have done for hundreds of years. Still the school's responsibility to feed them healthy food.

Are you saying that education is coercion? Should we close them down? If kids don't like math, they should not be coerced into learning it, after all Michelle Obama said they should learn it. F-ing incredible...

Are you guy's serious? This has to be a joke. Putting a vegetable or fruit on a tray is coercion and no American Patriot wants to eat their broccoli? We fought the revolution because Britain put brussel sprouts in lunches?

Yes, please mark Historian's post as the Poster for stupidity. Taking MAGA to stupid levels.

Wasn't this a Monty Python sketch?

It was never about me. Apparently you think it is about you and your arrogance and obtuseness.

It is tyranny when the government tries to force people to do things they might not want to do, issues that are none of their business.

I don't believe you are so stupid that you cannot understand the difference between options and coercion. It has been explained multiple times and you keep repeating irrelevant nonsense.

Maybe you're just a bot or a troll! You certainly are playing the role.

School lunch program is coercive tyranny. And I am playing a role?

And when you enter the conversation, you always make it about you and your anti-government BS... Do you really want to discuss an issue? Not just spew politics? I can care less who is behind something, just what is being done.

Have you actually looked at what the program consisted of? It set nutritional guidelines for school lunches, it didn't pick foods or set menus. You really have no idea what you are talking about.

Look at what killed the program - dairy farmers who wanted to sell whole milk, reduced fat, people choosing not to eat school lunch reduced revenue and the healthier products cost more. It had nothing to do with health of kids or tyrannical coercion it was money and lobbyist.

Government coercion? How about discussing Lobbyist dumping crappy unhealthy food in your kids to make more profit? That OK? Kid Obesity levels at 21% today, up from 5% in 1978. Why our lunches were different.

Are you really interested in discussing it? Up to 1980 school lunches were based on the 1946 National School Lunch Act which was calorie adequate. That is what we had, at least I did in NY.

In 1980, that went away and the fast food model went into effect until 2010. Pizza, burgers, fried chicken, and fries were used in school lunches to please student palates. It was mass-produced frozen crap. "According to the USDA, these pre-cooked frozen or deep-fried entrees jumped to over 50% of all lunches served by 1990 up from just 6% in 1970." Take a look at the meals that were being fed to kids. A lot of money was made on this crap.

You dog and animals have better nutritional profiles on their meals. We were, and in some places are, feeding out kids mass produced garbage. So, I have very little issue with updating the requirements, we did pretty well from 1946 to 1980. I could care less who championed it. Be clear, the Feds only provide the guidelines, your School District picks what gets served.

That is my position. You plan on providing something other than Patriots don't like vegetables?

Once again lots of words saying nothing. The fascists tried to force food items on people whether or not they wanted them or not. That is the definition of coercion. Having healthy food is obviously a great idea. Federal officials trying to force kids to eat their vegetables is stupid and tyrannical. It's none of their business.

By all means, continue wasting your time with the feigned ignorance and the obtuseness.

Your point was based in waste. As if kids not eating veggies is a new thing that occured because M Obama brought up a policy. That is patently stupid. Two issues with your point:

first kids not eating their peas is their choice. You cannot force people to do what is healthy for them. That is not the school's job. Sorry, as much as it offends your DOGE practicalities kids are going to throw out veggies, it is adults job to still make them available and teach them.

Second, the school's job IS to teach them what is healthy. The school should set the example of what a healthy meal is and provide it IF they provide meals. Teaching health and then providing unhealthy meals is wrong.

Finally, the Obama plan did not outlaw PBJ. It put limits on sodium, sugar and fat. Peter Atiilla says that and its inspired, M Obama its heresy.

My problem with you and the other Trump-ites is that you are more concerned with the messenger than the message. Kid obesity is a huge problem, she tried to help solve it a with real solution that didn't involve tactical gear. But she is a Dem, so it has to be wrong. That is why your groups positions are stupid you care more about who is saying it.

Again with the Trump rant when I am not a Trump fan.

The waste was documented. It happened. There was more trash/waste created.

Argue that it didn't happen and provide studies that show the study that proved it did wrong.

You are again missing the point of the kids being able to leave it off their tray versus forced to take it.

So the schools before her plan were setting the example. They were offering fruits and veggies. Her plan forced the kids to take them.

It isn't a group thing. If you want I can get into why I hated NCLB from Bush. Or many other Republican bills passed. I don't follow either party blindly.

I am not so blinded by Trump hate that I see him in everything.

From 2014….. you know before MAGA existed so you shouldn't be able to rant about Trump.

The program created waste, cost more, forced schools to cut budget in other areas, etc.

But yeah in your mind this is all about the name pushing the program…..

LLM to the rescue:

Here's the story behind that WSJ tweet: Syracuse University a large, well-known, financially stable private school with 22,000+ students missed its Fall 2026 undergraduate enrollment target and is now facing its first budget deficit in years.

Key points:

Undergraduate tuition is Syracuse's main revenue source, so the enrollment shortfall directly threatens its finances
To fill seats last spring, Syracuse offered tuition discounts up to $200,000 to students who'd previously turned it down, pushing its overall discount rate to 45% well above its projected 38.6% , and that elevated rate is locked in for those students' full four years
Enrollment fell about 3.5% year over year, driven partly by a drop in international and master's students international undergrads made up just 5% of the entering class, down from 12% two years earlier
The university already eliminated 93 academic programs (about 20% of its offerings) in April 2026 , cutting things like Classics and German
Chancellor Haynie framed it as part of a national trend the long-anticipated "enrollment cliff" from declining birth rates after the 2008 financial crisis, plus growing price sensitivity among families

The WSJ's framing is that this is significant precisely because Syracuse isn't a struggling small school it's a big brand name, which is why the tweet frames the crisis as "spreading upward." Worth noting: some outlets (like The College Investor) push back on Haynie's "it's all national headwinds" narrative, pointing to Syracuse's own financial-aid missteps as a contributing factor.

When did I mention Trump in this? This is a policy issue, not a Trump issue. If you check the record, Trump didn't do away with M. Obama's lunch program just made a few tweaks specifically with relaxing sodium and whole grain requirements. I have no issue with Trump's actions or positions on this issue and what we have is better than what we had from 1980-2010.

Obesity levels are still too high. But, at least it is on the agenda.

Not everything is about Trump.

True.

I think this illustrates another one of those important issues (with some good ideas) that the federal government should steer clear of. The swamp in Washington (politicians & bureaucrats) cannot solve such problems. They can only waste our money and create more problems. The higher one goes up the political food chain, the more corruption and incompetence there will be.
