He reminds me of a bank owner and SMU supporter that was part of the payment system for Pony Express and the dead hookers.

This guy was very wealthy and made money grow. He also thought his poop didn't stink and would say some of the most outlandish stuff I'd ever heard. Crazy thing, he had the sweetest wife.

He spent $100s like I spend dimes and spent a lot of it with me. After my third experience with him, I was fine not ever seeing him again.

Oh right, you just said you own interest in the most profitable brewery in Dallas that also has a kitchen staff and serves food. But it's not a restaurant. Interesting outrage considering the amount of public places, sports teams and other venues that have been renamed by the left.

Sure it's stupid.

So is all the other stuff that has been renamed over the past decade or so.

The Gulf of Mexico was used for slave trade and a resource for stealing native peoples land. Since it can't be moved or filled in, renaming is the logical choice as set by so many woke organizations and universities.

Naming it after the nation that had promoted more freedom than any other seems very logical…. and woke.

It is definitely NOT woke. Wokeness does not promote freedom. It does the opposite.

Considering the Gulf separates two continents both named 'America' ...

So ... 'Gulf of America' is kind of obvious.

Actually, the only two countries bordering on the Gulf, the US and Mexico, are both in North America. South America is nowhere near. Central America is also far away and part of North America.

Why is Trump doing it? Who knows? Yes, it's silly and for some it's clearly a distraction. Maybe that's why.

It's amazing how many people will get excited about something like this!

Oh please that is stupid in the extreme. No, secession is not constitutional in the United States. The Constitution does not provide for secession, and the Supreme Court ruled in 1869 that unilateral secession is unconstitutional.

Explanation
  • The Constitution does not provide for the dissolution of the government or the states that make it up.

  • The Constitution can be amended, but it does not provide a way for the government to dissolve itself.

  • Abraham Lincoln denied that a state had a constitutional right to secede.

  • The Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White that unilateral secession is unconstitutional.

However, some have argued that secession is a natural right or a right of revolution. The idea of secession has been a part of US politics since the country's beginning.

The difference between this and the other name changing stuff is that here we're talking about an international body of water, but I don't suppose anybody (on either side) actually cares.

I don't think the OP is "triggered" or "outraged" by this name change -- neither am I -- but what is the point? Especially when you know that the next administration is just going to change it back.

Like you said, it is stupid.
I think all the name changes are pretty stupid, except of course actually offensive names. If someone isn't triggered why start a thread on it, but that's neither here or there.

I just don't see the need for continual name changes.

  • The Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White that unilateral secession is unconstitutional.

However, some have argued that secession is a natural right or a right of revolution. The idea of secession has been a part of US politics since the country's beginning.

In 1861 there was no Supreme Court case, Congressional law, Amendment to the Constitution, or even a non-biding resolution that ever said a State could not leave the Federal Union.

Nor does a State voting to leave the Union "dissolve the government"

The US government would remain just has it had before....in Washington DC still operating.

"If you bring these leaders to trial it will condemn the North," Chase had warned his former cabinet colleagues in July, "for by the Constitution secession is not rebellion." As for the rebel chieftain, the authorities would have done better not to apprehend him. "Lincoln wanted Jefferson Davis to escape, and he was right. His capture was a mistake. His trial will be a greater one. We cannot convict him of treason. Secession is settled. Let it stay settled."~ Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase (Burke Davis, "The Long Surrender", 1985,; Shelby Foote, "The Civil War," V3, p. 1035)

"It is a common maxim of law, that every right has a means of enforcement; & every wrong a remedy. By this rule the right of secession is undoubted. The Constitution provides no means of coercing a state in the Union; nor any punishment for secession."-Kenosha Democrat, 1/11/1861

Secession means not part of the country.

We gonna charge the Germans in WW1 with Treason, maybe the Iraqi's in the Gulf War?

The U.S. never accepted secession as legitimate. Just because somebody says something does not make it real. Bruce Jenner is still a man.

Those comparisons are silly: Germany & Iraq were not part of the U.S. Virginia & South Carolina were.

Doesn't mean the Constitution actually says what you claim. Courts have been wrong many times before.

And there is a ton of writing from some great minds saying secession is not and was never Treason.

You know, kind of why none of the Confederates was ever tried for Treason.

I never said secession was treason, but I did quote almost directly the constitutional definition of treason. It must definitely says exactly what I claim. Secession can still be illegitimate without being treason.

Article III, Section 3:

"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

The direct quote for those who want to know.
