The greatest single loss of life for U.S. Navy SEALs occurred on August 6, 2011, when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down in Afghanistan. This incident resulted in the deaths of 30 American servicemen, including 17 Navy SEALs, with 15 of those being from SEAL Team Six's Gold Squadron.
