Gene was so out of it, he probably didn't take any of the meds that he needed. He probably thought his wife was taking a nap. The dog must have died from dehydration

That's terrible if not surprising to read.

Aww, man: Mr. Hackman, 95 with advanced Alzheimer's, was alone for about a week after his wife and sole caregiver died.

Was thinking the same thing. Maybe having regular visitors (especially when you reach a certain age) is a good idea. Heck, a cleaning lady once or twice a week? Maybe a garden or yard guy?

Once the wife died, I'm not sure a phone call would've done Hackman any good.

When my dad had advanced dementia, he could not use a phone.

So an unanswered phone call would have been an alarm bell

An unanswered call to her, maybe, depending on her phone habits.

Not nearly as useful as having somebody scheduled to come by the house a couple times a week.

Either way, family knows habits and if they had living children, someone should have been alerted after more than a couple days.

My in-laws are facing health issues with one of them having dementia. I can guarantee that my wife knows when something is not right in a matter of hours.
