He was so good in so many different roles. I had heard he was staying very active riding his bike daily in Santa Fe.
Not sure if true or apocryphal, but I heard he retired after Mooseport because he was so embarrassed.

He definitely was in my top five actors.

I've seen several things today that he retired due to health/stress of the job was too much for his health.

Sad news. Such a strange story as each new detail comes out.

I really liked his movies. Well most of them as I will admit I have not seen many of his older ones.

One would think if that a gun was involved they would announce it. That the dog died as well is curious.

There were two other dogs that were just fine, one inside, one out. They said that there might have been a doggie door. There wasn't any dog poop for the German Shepard that was in the crate, so he must have died abruptly. And the front door was unlocked. If they died of carbon monoxide two weeks ago, the fuel source could had gone out by the time the EMTs go there. So they wouldn't have detected any. But it should show up during the autopsy in blood samples

There appears to be an assumption that the dog's death was from the same cause that killed Hackman and his wife, which is not necessarily so. The dog also needs to be autopsied.

I would check the refrigerator and trash for clues as to what the couple may have eaten for their last meal. For instance, if they consumed improperly prepared fugu (puffer fish, a Japanese delicacy) death would have occurred within hours but not necessarily at the same time.

As for the door being open...it may have been a nice day outside and they left the door open for some fresh air and to let the other dogs could come and go.

All of that is conjecture on my part and is not an informed, professional opinion.

I dont think they can rule carbon monoxide out until we see the autopsy, can they?

That we know. However what we dont know is whatever fuel carbon monoxide MIGHT have come from, had expired. Thus they wouldn't have detected it 9 days later

Would the autopsy disclose carbon monoxide 9 days later?

According to what I have heard, it will still be in the blood. Once the heart stops pumping, it cant get dispersed or something like that. But I am not a doctor

I sure don't know, but this from WaPo

A forensic pathologist has ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of the couple's deaths, Mendoza said, but neither the cause nor manner has been determined.

A forensic pathologist has ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of the couple's deaths, Mendoza said, but neither the cause nor manner has been determined.

"Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual," Sheriff Adan Mendoza said in a statement, adding that carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals.

Mendoza added: "There were no apparent signs of foul play."

However, he stressed, "The manner and cause of death has not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation."

Meanwhile, CNN affiliate KOAT reports foul play has not been ruled out, adding final autopsy results and toxicology reports will hold the answer. Citing the search warrant, KOAT reports deputies believe, based on evidence and experience, the couple suddenly fell.

"The autopsy is going to be key, and the toxicology," Mendoza said during a Thursday news conference.

Results "generally take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to generate," Chris Ramirez, spokesperson for the New Mexico medical investigator's office, told CNN.

Was the car in the garage without gasoline and the keys in the ignition?

How could they both fall? Weren't they in 2 separate rooms 40 feet apart? Statistically possible. But to both fall and die separately would seem impossible if both not named Gerald Ford per SNL reporters

He fell and was injured. She gave him enough pills to end it, then took enough herself and gave some to the dog. That's my guess.

And no letter and he has kids? Seems very odd especially given how emotionally impacted he was in his dad walking out in his mom as a kid.

But he was 95 so who knows how lucid he was.

Actually, I half-expect to read something like this:

Police Baffled by Death ... of Death

Authorities were stunned by the discovery of the corpse of one Mortis Finite, aka "Death", in Carmel California.

Witnesses mentioned an altercation between Finite and a man described as a "tough-looking centenarian", although no physical violence was witnessed.

I think this is going to be it, especially with pills found all over the counter near her body. Sounds like a murder suicide, or just a double suicide. An overdose.

Gene Hackman died of heart disease, his wife died of hantavirus about 1 week prior, authorities say

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) Authorities revealed Friday that actor Gene Hackman died of heart disease and showed severe signs of Alzheimer's disease a full week after his wife died of hantavirus in their home.

Authorities initially ruled out foul play after the bodies were discovered Feb 26. Immediate tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were negative.

Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell said it was possible that Hackman was not aware his wife was deceased in their home.

"Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer's disease," Jarrell said. "He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that's what resulted in his death."

Hackman, 95, was found in the home's entryway. His death was tied to heart disease with Alzheimer's disease contributing.

Betsy Arakawa, 65, was found with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the bathroom counter. Authorities linked her death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal disease spread by infected rodent droppings.

It is typically is reported in spring and summer, often due to exposures that occur when people are near mouse droppings in homes, sheds or poorly ventilated areas.

Jarrell said it was not known how quickly Arakawa died.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza made the announcement alongside state fire and health officials at a news conference.

Investigators earlier retrieved personal items from the couple's home, including a monthly planner and two cellphones.
