We all know there are speeders on the highway. In fact, most of us probably fall into the category of speeder. However, when a speeder is caught we usually don't scream about how unfair a ticket is. The risk of the ticket was assumed. When a person fails to control their speed and hurts someone or damages something the expectation is that they are held accountable just as they are held accountable for paying a ticket.

So, while many of us Texans have assumed there are plenty of illegals in the state, I don't think there are that many of us that would say they should not assume the risk brought on by their behavior.

GWB tried hard for this and Ronald Reagan also had a pathway to citizenship. It is my opinion those with over 10 years productive labor and law abiding should have a pathway to citizenship. I don't like the anger at all towards the immigrants wanting to be productive workers and make a better life for their familes.

One of my best friends growing up, folks were illegal I'm pretty sure, his dad was a ranch forman and a great guy. His mom worked in the cafeteria at school, even though in Mexico she was an actual school teacher. I ate at their home with them many times. He was at our house plenty.

We worked in the cotton fields together a couple of summers and he was a roomate of mine in college for a year, before he decided he wanted to go back home. The Hispanic family is very close knit and he was homesick. Told me he regretted that decision on many occasions.

I also worked in the fields with immigrants a couple of others years, though not together. I worked with my brothers and a couple of friends and they worked at the other side of the property doing the same work chopping cotton. We had different work patterns as I would stay out in the fields 100% of the time except lunch, they would rotate, some resting in the back of their PU some working, never all out in the fields at the same time.

I got paid less than minimum farm wages, I'm sure they made even less. I always hated when a white PU truck would drive by the fields, you would see those dudes hide. Felt bad for them. We would wave at them in the morning and they would wave back, but never worked in the same group.

I have never looked down on a hard working person trying to better their life for themselves and their family, it is admirable actually, it needs to be done in an orderly legal way though, where our government knows who is coming here and have control of the immigrant traffic.

Guest worked makes complete sense if done with a legal process. Heck, it would most likely raise their wages and provide them legal protections.

I'm guessing the Chambers of Commerce were strongly against it from fear of stifling growth and development.
