KEY POINTS
  • FBI agents assigned to review files in the criminal case against Jeffrey Epstein were instructed to "flag" any documents that mentioned President Donald Trump, Sen. Richard Durbin said
  • Durbin asked the Justice Department and FBI to explain what his office called "apparent discrepancies" regarding handling of the Epstein files and findings from a Justice Department memo.
  • Trump has called on supporters to drop their pursuit of the release of the files, saying the controversy of their withholding by Attorney General Pam Bondi is a "hoax."
FBI agents assigned earlier this year to review investigative files in the criminal case against notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were instructed to "flag" any documents that mentioned President Donald Trump, Sen. Richard Durbinsaid Friday.

Durbin's claim came as the Illinois Democrat sent the Justice Department and FBI letters asking them to explain what his office called "apparent discrepancies regarding the handling of the Epstein files and findings from a July 7 Department of Justice (DOJ) memorandum and instructions reportedly received by FBI personnel."

Durbin's letters, which were addressed to Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino, added to pressure on the Trump administration over Bondi's decision to withhold from the public evidence about Epstein despite past promises that it would be released.
Durbin is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has oversight over the Justice Department and FBI.

The senator's description of instructions given to FBI agents regarding mentions of Trump's name was made in the letter to Patel.

Trump is a former friend of Epstein, who died from suicide in a Manhattan federal jail in August 2019, weeks after his arrest on child sex trafficking charges.

On Thursday night, The Wall Street Journal reported that a "bawdy" letter bearing Trump's signature was sent to Epstein in 2003 for this 50th birthday. Trump has angrily denied writing such a letter and said he will sue the Journal.

"According to information my office received, the FBI was pressured to put approximately 1,000 personnel in its Information Management Division (IMD) … on 24-hour shifts to review approximately 100,000 Epstein-related records in order to produce more documents that could then be released on an arbitrarily short deadline," Durbin wrote to Patel.

"This effort, which reportedly took place from March 14 through the end of March, was haphazardly supplemented by hundreds of FBI New York Field Office personnel, many of whom lacked the expertise to identify statutorily-protected information regarding child victims and child witnesses or properly handle FOIA requests," the letter said.

"My office was told that these personnel were instructed to 'flag' any records in which President Trump was mentioned."

Durbin then referenced a well-known quote by Trump about Epstein, made to a magazine when they were still friends.

"Notably, in 2002, Mr. Trump said of Mr. Epstein, 'I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy, He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side,' " Durbin wrote.

CNBC has requested comment from the FBI about Durbin's letter.

You can be sure FBI agents were told long ago to flag the name Trump if it appeared anywhere in the Epstein files

Simply too good of a political weapon not to use

Yeah Biden and his minions decided not to use such 'evidence' against Trump during the 2024 campaign out of the goodness of their hearts.

It absolutely could be from Donald. Big damage control going on here, not that it matters.

If the letter Maxwell had was real, it's over for Donald.

He also appears to say on a recording that he is in the Epstein files. The actual quote is "It was actually even before that administration that they (FBI) had been running these files. And so much of the things we found, were fake, with me..."

If Trump had sex with women that Epstein was trafficking, I cannot wait to hear you guys talk about policy over character again.

They're all in the Epstein files. Unbelievable that neither side wants to release the info. That tells you all you need to know.

And agree that does not sound anything like the voice of DJT, and if it was it would've come out long ago.

But they're all on a list, in an address book, on a flight log, etc. etc. Hell, they're all in pictures with Epstein and/or Maxwell. And, frankly, that doesn't prove much of anything other than Epstein was great at making powerful contacts.

There have been some pretty good law firms (Boies Schiller among them) that have taken aim at supposed Epstein clients and not scored a direct hit. If there was a juicy treasure trove of real actual evidence of Gates, Clinton, Trump et al engaging in the purchasing of sexual services from underage girls, I think we'd have it by now.

I'm of the mind that the evidence would disappear or be doctored by now... if it truly has the elites on it. There's no way it survived 6 years. Despite some claims that the FBIs system would make it too difficult, I'm going with widespread corruption can make the difficult very possible.

Trump may have been on it, both Clintons may have been on it, but I don't see why they'd keep it alive where a whistle blower could leak it.

Because they used misdemeanor charges expanded to felonies. That's one heck of a stretch. If they had something on him, they would have brought him down unless it would have damaged them just as bad.

They (both sides) like their fund raising off of talking points more than they like taking proper action.

Trump may be in there and if he is, DOJ should smoke him. However, if the smoke trump, they should smoke'em all.

They did have some Epstein stuff. It probably just hits harder today, because Trump was the one saying release th he list back then, and today trying to cover it all up.

There is still no smoking gun, but Trump trying to cover it up after all he said about Epstein, is making it way worse than it had to be for him.

Trump was told by Bondi his name appeared multiple times in Epstein files: Report

The officials told Trump of their plan not to release any additional documents.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Attorney General Pam Bondi and her deputy Todd Blanche informed President Donald Trump in May that his name appeared multiple times in the government's files on Jeffrey Epstein that the Department of Justice and the FBI reviewed.

The officials told Trump of their plan not to release any additional documents, the report says, because the material contained child pornography and the personal information of victims…….

In order to get Trump, the left has done:

1. Spied on his 2016 campaign and transition team.
2. Invented the Russian hoax to derail his presidency.
3. Impeached him twice.
4. Set up the January 6th insurrection.
5. Sent the number 3 DOJ attorney to New York to begin the lawfare.
6. Got a ridiculous judgment against him in order to bankrupt him.
7. Convicted him a crime that still has not been identified.
8. Changed the laws of New York to allow a civil case to go forward.
9. Funded and directed the lawfare against him in Georgia.
10. Invented a classified document charge, appointed a special counsel, and raided his residency with orders to kill if obstructed.
11. Tried to remove him from the 2024 ballots.
12. Shot him.
13. Attempted a second assignation.

But after all of that, they kept quite about his Epstein contacts despite having exclusive access to that evidence for four years.

They're making it seem like this is the first time the FBI really went through and made lists of names. It's pretty incredible if that's true. But it would fit with the narrative that nobody, including the Biden administration, wanted all those records combed through, lists made, names released.
