So, this guy is my representative in Congress, and he's getting a lot of play right now, mostly because he was on Joe Rogan a few weeks ago. He's a very eloquent speaker, and purports to be a devout Christian and a progressive at the same time. As of late, I have seen a lot of my Christian friends really talking him up. I have one in particular that called him a "true follower of Jesus" who puts into practice Christ's words.
He recently said this at a speaking engagement last week in Austin: "Instead of posting the Ten Commandments in every classroom, why don't they post money is the root of all evil in every boardroom? Why don't they post do not judge in every courtroom? Why don't they post turn the other cheek in the halls of the Pentagon? Or it's easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a needle than to get into the kingdom of heaven on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange?"
I have my own thoughts, and some thoughts on this guys politics in general, but before I commented, was curious as to where others stood on this guy.
so much of his gospel was a misquoted or misapplied context wise..
"Love of money"
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Judge righteously as you shall be judged as you judge.
Turn the other cheek is so misunderstood. If the Jews, as subjects of Rome, did not comply with a Roman soldier's requests for anything from a drink of water to handing over personal property, a swift backhand to the right cheek was common. To open hand slap is reserved for equals and if they used their left hand, it was considered unclean.
Thus, in giving the other cheek, the jew asserted his humanity in a brave countermove a humble response, yet also an act of courage against the oppressive system.
This is not an act of submission.
