There is a veritable lake of rumors and guesses about what's actually happening in Iran, and how this conflict will end. Naturally, the rumors and guesses align according to ideology, and sadly also according to ignorance. Not many people have followed Iran between the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 and now.
Even fewer paid attention to the several uprisings of Iranian people against their regime. This is even true in the media, which seems to paint the entire Middle East in shades of Israeli or American lackey, Jihadist, or their idea of an objective observer who just happens to hate the US as they do. To understand the matter in context, we need to consider all the stakeholders, as well as the known goals and objectives for this conflict.

Start with the noise from the President. Those who hate the President jump on every statement as if the President is obliged to let our enemies know what we not only are doing, but why, as well as what we plan to do. The adults understand that conflicting statements are part of the course, just as Iran's spokesmen have made conflicting statements to hide their own intentions.

Next, we should consider Trump's known history from his first term. The TDS crowd has made a number of statements which are absurdly repeating claims from his first term which proved false. Trump has never wanted a war without resolution, nor to set up garrisons in other countries he certainly is aware of how the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan played out, even if the collapse at the end was 90+% due to the Biden Administration's abysmal panic. The plan for Iran certainly took that aspect into account.

The United States has wargamed all major scenarios for conflict with Iran over the past several decades, and this includes evolutions in warfare like drone attacks and missiles targeting cities. The outcome is well within projected results from the wargames, nothing truly outside the scope of expectations. That has to mean there was something going on with Iran that for the military justified the attack on Iran. The specific reason is likely highly classified, but we might gain insight from a look at the history since 1979:

1979 -the Islamic Revolution (not a majority of Iranians, but a radical minority of Shiite militants determined to not only overthrow the secular regime of the Shah, but establish Shiite control over the majority Sunni Muslims).

1988 Operating Preying Mantis marks the largest naval conflict since WW2, as the US Navy strikes Iranian naval targets in reprisal for mining a USS Samuel B Roberts. The US destroyed several intelligence facilities, two abandoned oil platforms, and sank at least five Iranian ships.

2002 - The United States reveals it is aware of a secret Iranian uranium enrichment program, with numerous facilities (especially at Natanz) built for the purpose of creating a nuclear weapon for Iran. The intel comes from Israel and Iranian dissident groups. This begins a long dispute between the United States and Iran on the question of whether Iran has the right to create a nuclear weapon.

2006 Newly elected Iranian President Ahmadinejad cancels negotiations with Britain, France, and Germany, claiming Iran will make a nuclear weapon against all opposition.

2009 Green Movement protests in Iran are violently suppressed by the government, especially by the Revolutionary Guard forces. A prolonged seditionist movement takes form in Iran.

2010 The Stuxnet virus disrupts and sabotages Iranian nuclear development. The virus is reportedly the creation of Israel, the US, or both in cooperation.

2012 Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz, in response to US naval activity in the Gulf. The US ignores the threat, leading many to believe Iran lacks the means to enforce a blockade.

2015 the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is signed, lifting economic sanctions in exchange for Iran abandoning its nuclear weapons program (spoiler alert the Iranians agreed then continued to seek a nuke anyway)

2018 US abandons the JCPOA, as Iran reaches 85% enrichment levels (civilian-use uranium is between 2% and 5%, 60% is the general threshold for a crude weapon).

2019 Iran launches attacks on oil tankers in response to alleged US intelligence interference with Iran's uranium enrichment. Iran also downs a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz, and attacks several Saudi oil facilities. At that time, President Trump called off retaliatory strikes at this time, preferring to apply economic sanctions and authorizing non-lethal cyberattacks.

2020 After an Iranian rocket attack on K-1 Air Base in Iraq and the US Embassy in Iraq, a US drone strike kills Qasem Soleimani, US and Iran on brink of direct war. An unexplained explosion at Natanz tears apart centrifuges at about the same time. In November of that year, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a top scientist for Iran's nuclear program, is killed by a remote-controlled machine gun. Also complicating matters is the apparently accidental downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane by Iran.

2021 A cyberattack on the Natanz facility once again destroys material and degrades the enrichment levels, from an estimated 90% back down to around 60% enriched.

2022 - Iran accuses Israel of poisoning two nuclear scientists in different cities within three days of each other, though circumstances remain unclear.

July 31, 2024 Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is assassinated by an apparent Israeli airstrike during a visit to Tehran. Israel had pledged to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the Oct. 7 attack.

Sept. 27, 2024 Israeli airstrike kills Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Formed by Iranian Revolutionary Guard members who went to Lebanon in 1982 to fight invading Israeli forces, Hezbollah was the first group that Iran backed and used as a way to export its brand of political Islam.

Oct. 1, 2024 Iran launches its second direct attack on Israel, though a U.S.-led coalition and Israel shoot down most of the missiles.

Oct. 16, 2024 Israel kills Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip.

Oct. 26, 2024 Israel openly attacks Iran for the first time, striking air defense systems and sites associated with its missile program.

February 2025 Trump calls for a nuclear peace agreement between the US and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says any effort to prevent Iran from making a nuclear weapon will 'end in failure'.

April 3, 2025 - U.S. congressmen Joe Wilson and Jimmy Panetta introduced a 'Free Iraq from Iran' bill. The legislation mandates the development of a comprehensive U.S. strategy to irreversibly dismantle Iran-backed militias, including the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), and calls for the suspension of U.S. assistance to Iraq until these militias are fully removed. The bill also imposes sanctions on Iraqi political and military figures aligned with Iran, and provides support for Iraqi citizens and independent media to expose abuses committed by these militias. Its primary objective is to restore Iraq's sovereignty and reduce Iranian dominance without resorting to direct military intervention.

April 12, 2025 The US and Iran enter into formal negotiations.

April 30, 2025 Iran executes a man it said worked for Israel's Mossad foreign intelligence agency and played a role in the killing of Revolutionary Guard Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei in Tehran on May 22, 2022.

June 7, 2025, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and 27 entities, including Iranian nationals and firms based in the UAE and Hong Kong. These targets include the Zarringhalam brothers, accused of laundering billions via shell companies tied to the IRGC and the Central Bank of Iran. The funds reportedly supported Iran's nuclear and missile programs, oil sales, and militant proxies

June 12, 2025 US forces bomb Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. This is notable because Fordow and Isfahan had previously been considered beyond destruction.

Friday, June 13, 2025 Israel launches blistering attacks on the heart of Iran's nuclear and military structure, deploying warplanes and drones previously smuggled into the country to assault key facilities and kill top generals and scientists.

Saturday, June 14, 2025 Israel expands its airstrikes to include targets in Iran's energy industry as Iranian missile and drone attacks continue on Israel.

Sunday, June 15, 2025 Israel unleashes airstrikes across Iran for a third day and threatens even greater force as some Iranian missiles evade Israeli air defenses to strike buildings in the heart of the country. Planned talks on Iran's nuclear program in Oman between the United States and Tehran, which could provide an off-ramp, are called off.

January 13, 2026 Trump warns that the US would "intervene" if Iran continued to kill protesters in Iran.

February 6, 2026 -Oman mediates talks between the United States and Iran in hopes of lowering tensions.

February 24, 2026 Iranian officials reportedly showed great flexibility in setting further discussions to avoid war.

February 28, 2026 Operation Epic Fury begins, commencing US-Israel military operations against Iran, which continues at this time.

That's a lot to take in, but it indicates the following basic points:

  • The United States has had a number of military conflicts with Iran prior to this one;
  • Israel has been the US' closest ally in working to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, with varying degrees of success;
  • There has been a movement within Iran against the regime dating back to at least 2009. The US IC has been working with these groups in various ways, but which for obvious reasons cannot be publicly discussed here;
  • Iran has been a pariah nation in the Middle East since the hardline Shiites took power, in part because of the long conflict between Shiite and Sunni Muslims and in part due to questions of whether Muslim governments should be more secular or more religious in laws. This has led to a changing cast of Middle East nations cooperating with the US against Iran, with Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, and the UAE helping US forces at different times;
  • The US-Israel relationship has evolved over the period, although both nations have shared intelligence and sometimes also military operations to degrade Iran's nuclear programs. The influence Israel has on the US remains in debate;
  • Iran has had its facilities hacked and attacked, its scientists killed or defect, yet it continues to be able to develop enriched uranium to around 60% levels. This reflects the difficulty in preventing a determined enemy from enriching uranium. Iran's demonstrated ability to build missiles capable of reaching Europe adds another level of threat to Iran;
  • Finally, keep in mind that Middle Eastern nations have a history of saying one thing in public and another in private. Perhaps the best example of this would be Saudi Arabia publicly refusing to base US troops in 1990, while privately providing such a base. A number of Middle East nations would prefer a new Iran regime, especially one with a secular political leader.

Keep trying to imagine how Roosevelt would have reacted if world oil prices were allowed to dominate our military tactics during World War 2.

Some of you folks are beyond clueless. We are in a WAR....not a video game.

If higher gas prices are the biggest discomfort we endure in order to destroy the power of the mullah's once and for all........

count your blessings.
