You admit Trump says "some crazy things", is this one of them? Does cancelling long standing annual maneuvers with a major regional ally that directly buffers one of, if not the most, belligerent nuclear powers and sits within a 100 or so miles of China help or hurt the interests of the Inited States?

While I agree that announcing such things in open channels is stupid, there may be another factor here: given the resources committed to the Persian Gulf right now, we may not have the resources necessary - particularly given the drawdown in the SPR - to hold those exercises. If that's the case, then Trump's announcement is simply covering for a darker reality. In that scenario, his announcement is better than "we're cancelling these exercises because right now we don't have the means to conduct them."

Also, there needs to be some sort of permanent solution for the Korean situation. We're running out of the ability to project power there. South Korea is slowly committing demographic suicide.
