The government entering into student loans was a blank check to higher education. I have railed against this since the BFans website and detailed ideas on how to get out, while still fulfilling the goal of government mandated student loans, which was to improve accessibility to higher education. It was Democrats who pushed this, but not only have Republicans done nothing about it, from a certain point of view the Democrats are the ones who realized the mistake and tried to do something to help those with crippling mountains of debt. Republicans stopped them, and restarted student loan payments.

Nearly everyone on this site had a problem with DEI, and again, since the BFan website I have been a proponent of phasing out affirmative action entirely, starting with education.

Well, I agree there is an issue there, but not your analysis.

First, the college scam. Prior to WW2, college was not even a serious option for the average American. Too expensive, too elitist, and many degrees available even then were not designed to create a good career, but were focused on more esoteric objectives.

After WW2, a lot of US companies were hiring for all sorts of positions, including management (which was seen as a better career option than floor worker), and the US government created the GI Bill to help soldiers go to college. From 1946 to about 2006, getting a degree, or earning an advanced degree, was seen as a great way to build a future. We know what happened since then.

Complaints about the cost of college go back to the 1970s, actually, which is why so many politicians pushed first for easy-access student loans (the same guys who pressured banks to give home loans to people with lousy credit), then for the government to guarantee student loans. We know what happened since then.

In general, people on the left want government to support college loans, also forgive them, and create jobs for anyone with a degree so they don't ask why they were pressured to go to college if it doesn't help them. It's no coincidence that the Left controls Academia, which is why real reform is opposed by the Left.

Republicans generally opposed government hand-outs up to 2008, then got into a blame game with Democrats after the Great Recession (GOP lost). Republicans have since focused on trade jobs and trying to restart a manufacturing boom, and we know how that has worked out.
