Random question: I had forgotten how far apart in time the three attacks were. Watching the news this morning, reports indicated fighters were scrambled after the first attack. Any sense as to why they were not patrolling and possible set to intercept the rest of the planes?

After the shock and horror of that day I'll never forget in the immediate days and weeks that followed how united and resolute the country was. American flags everywhere. Church attendance soared. Republicans and Democrats were united like I've never seen before or since. GWB was a great unifying POTUS during this time period as well. It was amazing. Too bad we couldn't maintain it.

I agree. The most united I've ever seen the country. GWB did a great job early on.

Sadly, it fell apart. The Iraq debacle didn't help.

The three successful attacks happened in the space of about 45 minutes. The first two within 16 minutes.

I'm sure fighters were looking, but many planes were still in the air and the hijackers turned off the transponders. It would have been like looking for needles in a haystack.

I often wondered if Flight 93 was actually shot down, but I haven't seen any evidence for that.

This is hateful prejudice. You're blaming all Muslims for what happened, when the great majority of Muslims in the world condemned it.

At least he's showing up. Our esteemed "Best President Ever" isn't showing up because he won't get to speak.

The decent presidents are there: Bush, Clinton, Obama, and Biden.

What really put division into overdrive was the election of Obummer, the great divider, in 2008 - especially with regard to race relations. It's no coincidence that for the most part race relations had steadily improved from the 60s until that point and then went south thereafter.

Im confused. The Battle of Vienna took place on September 12, 1683 not September 11. It followed a 2-3 month siege of Vienna.

Probably because for a long time it was incorrectly reported as the Battle of Vienna ending on Sept. 11th

That is mostly likely the date the 19 hijackers and Al Qaeda leaders knew.

They themselves not realizing the actual date of the battle itself was one day different...on Sept. 12th.

Even just googling the event and there are plenty of Western-modern sources saying the wrong date of Sept. 11th as the date of the Battle. That is when Sobieski and the Christian relief force arrived...

The Christians held on until Sept. 11th in the siege.... "On September 11-12, 1683, a multinational relief army arrived to break the two-month Ottoman encirclement of the Habsburg capital. A coalition known as the Holy League- comprising various Imperial, German, and Polish troops led by Polish King John III Sobieski- gathered on the Kahlenberg mountain overlooking the city on September 11"

[Coalition troops gathered on the Kahlenberg mountain on September 11 and launched a massive assault on September 12, routing the Ottoman forces- notably featuring a massive cavalry charge]
https://www.britannica.com/event/Siege-of-Vienna-1683

[There have been suggestions that it may have been because September 11-12, 1683 was when the Ottoman Empire was defeated at the Battle of Vienna. Muslim military forces have never again penetrated so far into the heartland of Europe, and the Turks themselves didn't reverse their decline as a military power until 1921-ironically when they won the Battle of Sakarya near Ankara on a September 13, the 238th anniversary of the day they retreated from Vienna after being defeated.]

[It was on September 11 1683 that the conquering armies of Islam were met, held, and thrown back at the gates of Vienna.
Now this, of course, is not a date that has only obscure or sectarian significance. It can rightly, if tritely, be called a hinge-event in human history. The Ottoman empire never recovered from the defeat; from then on it was more likely that Christian or western powers would dominate the Muslim world than the other way around.
In our culture, the episode is often forgotten or downplayed, except by Catholic propagandists like Hilaire Belloc and GK Chesterton.
But in the Islamic world, and especially among the extremists, it is remembered as a humiliation in itself and a prelude to later ones. (The forces of the Islamic Jihad in Gaza once published a statement saying that they could not be satisfied until all of Spanish Andalusia had been restored to the faithful as well.)
If my speculation is correct, then whoever wanted to destroy the hearts of New York and Washington was animated by something more than a recent grievance over the West Bank or the Iraqi sanctions.]

Anyone remember BUM from the old site?

He was dead sure that it was shot down. Along with every other conspiracy theory out there about 9/11.

Like:

The buildings were brought down by explosives. Including #7

The 4th plane landed in Vegas/area 51 and those people all took massive payouts to go live somewhere else.

A missile hit the Pentagon.

On and on.

I wouldn't say Islam is EVIL. There are certainly sects of Islam who are the devil and want to kill us. I give you Saudi and Iran. However, there are many Muslims who are peaceful, engaged and assimilated. There are others that are not. I frequent a Cigar Lounge in BKK and the hotel (Intercontinental) that seems to cater to Muslims. I have to admit some of those folks make me a little uneasy, particularly the women with full length Black Burka's with eye slits. There are some ladies who just wear very pretty outfits with Hijab. They seem worlds apart. All religions have there fringe. Christians have Neo Nazis, White Power and the like. One thing I have learned from living in 3 different foreign countries and visited 45 countries is as Depeche Mode would say "People are People". People are generally good folks. Govts are the problem and generally suck and the people don't really have a choice. You can lump present day America in that pathetic govt, apparatus . People are generally well meaning with exceptions.

The difference between Islam and fringe Christians is the Christians don't want you dead for leaving the faith.

It's an apples to bowling balls comparison.

As for govts. vs. people being the problem, no, it's both. Islam and its repressive set of beliefs is changing the face of Europe, and I suspect will ultimately be its downfall.

The 911 report has a lot.of good.details on our response.

At a high level there was confusion on the plane locations because the FAA was overwhelmed and thr pilots tuned off the transponders

Some of the aircraft that flew out were confused and were patrolling the Eastern sealine protecting from an external threat

This is a very detailed summary

Bill Maher had a similar comedy line about that disingenuous comparison argument.

"When South Park got threatened last week by Islamists incensed at their depiction of Muhammad, it served or should serve as a reminder to all of us that our culture isn't just different from one that makes death threats to cartoonists: it's better. Because when I make a joke about the Pope, he doesn't send one of his Swiss guards in their striped pantaloons to stick a pike in my ass. When I make a Jewish joke, Rabbis may kvetch about it but they don't pull out a scimitar and threaten an adult circumcision. And when I insult Scientology, the worst that happens is -[The lights in the studio go out.] -Bill Maher

I think the authorities reacted as quickly as possible. All air traffic over the US was completely shut down. It took some time, but it's pretty amazing how quickly they did that when you consider how many planes that meant and how much confusion there was. The live news reports from the time make that clear. I remember that day quite well, including wild rumors and speculation (fifth plane?) mostly false.

Mamdani should not be at the 9-11 memorial, not because he is Muslim, but because of his ties to terrorists. If you don't know, you should learn about what he did with the pen in the 9-11 signing ceremony.

You were not the only one who wondered if it had been shot down. Condoleezza Rice said that the vice president was trying to find out at first if it had been shot down because the order had been given to shoot down planes that did not respond. The reason you have not seen any evidence for it is that there is no evidence for it because what actually happened was the passengers forced the plane down.

Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero.

Quote:

Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can't speak very loud. This is an emergency. I'm a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked.

Lisa: I understand. Can they see you?

Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake.

Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor.

Lisa: Are you okay?

Todd: We're going down… wait. No. We're leveling off. We changed directions. We're flying east again.

Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true?

Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It's very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I'm afraid your plane may be part of their plan.

Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you'll call.

Lisa: I promise.

Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We've been married ten years. She's pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I'll always love her. We have two boys David, he's 3, and Andrew, he's 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don't know if it's a girl or a boy.

Lisa: I'll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.)

Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol.

Todd: I understand. I'll be back.

Todd: Everyone knows this isn't a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot.

Lisa: What are you going to do?

Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We'll take them out.

Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord's Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.

Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let's Roll.
