How long do you want to ignore this user?
[The activist journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of the fraudulent '1619 Project,' faces a complex reality about educating her smart daughter, Najya. You really want to read this one (and, like all NYT articles from me, is unlocked). Hannah-Jones and her husband, a "successful upper middle-class family," in her own words, put their nerdy, bookish little girl in a poor, predominantly black NYC public school for reasons of ideological principle.

Quote:

Faraji and I felt an obligation to make educational decisions based on the collective good and not just our individual advantage. New York is considered one of this nation's most liberal cities, while operating a school system that is among the most racially segregated. This segregation exists because policymakers and affluent parents - even those who profess a belief in integration and equality- shed their advocacy at the schoolhouse door and refuse to take or support any substantial action to integrate the city's schools. Faraji and I decided that our role in this struggle meant upending the status quo and sending our child not to a wealthy white school but to a poor Black one.

It was a disaster for the child, who is now a teenager furious at her parents for ruining her chance to get a good education. For example:
Quote:

But my child just shook her head, her face a mask of disbelief, and something else: betrayal.
"So you had money to send me to one of the best schools, and you chose not to?" she said, hurling her words. "Because other kids are disadvantaged, you didn't want to put me in a great school?"
Najya was asking what I'd accomplished by not choosing the "best" school for her. And the honest answer is, I don't know. When it comes to the choices my husband and I have made about public education, these days I feel that I failed both my values and my child.

What was so bad about these schools? One example from a story that's full of them:
Quote:

Toward the end of first grade, Najya started sometimes saying she didn't like her school and complaining how chaotic it was at lunch. I decided to visit during the lunch period and was shocked by what I saw. Najya's class and another class were sitting at their tables in the cafeteria with no lunch and no adult supervision. Children were running wild, chasing, hitting and pushing each other while the teacher's aides and cafeteria workers stood by looking bored.
Several times, I had to instruct children to stop striking each other and to sit down, at one point physically pulling two boys apart. When I asked one of the aides why the children weren't being supervised, she told me the lunch period was short-staffed. After I sat back down with Najya, she told me, "It's always like this, and that's why I don't want to go to this school."
It was not the children that horrified me kids of all incomes are rambunctious at lunchtime. It was the callous disregard of the adults. Students respond to the high or low expectations of institutions and the grown-ups who operate them, and it was clear that these children were getting the message.

NHJ doesn't quite realize that middle-class parents of all races pay lots of money to get away from kids like those who don't know how to behave in a school lunch room, and school staff who cannot be bothered to care. Najya's anger comes from her parents caring more about their racial-equality principles, which are not based on reality, than the welfare of their own daughter.
It got pretty bad. For example, in that first elementary school, Najya thought she was good at math. Turns out her teacher wasn't grading her math homework. The poor child had no idea how incompetent she was. The Hannah-Joneses put her in a better school, but this turned out to be one that, while administered by a good principal, was full of teachers who spent most of their time doting on disruptive students rather than focusing on the kids there who really wanted to learn (even today, NHJ calls this "good educational practice").
So they sent Najya to a middle school that practiced open admissions, meaning they didn't turn away any child who showed up. It wasn't a lot better. Later, NHJ visits the principal, a woman NHJ praises named Emily Paige (who, I'm guessing by her name, is white). Paige is reduced to tears as she realizes that her school failed kids like Najya, who really wanted to learn, by prioritizing the troubled kids who really didn't:
Quote:

She paused. I could see the pain of this admission etched in her face. "It is important to not, in our pursuit of being antiracist, lower expectations," she told me. "Because this is what happens, right? It's racism under the guise of antiracism."

In the piece, NHJ still can't let go of the idea that the reason these predominantly black and poor schools perform so poorly is because they don't receive enough funding. You know how much NYC spends per public school student annually? About $35,000. That's a lot. But it NHJ World, black students can't fail; they can only be failed. Nowhere in this story do the parents of all those failing students come up as a factor.
I've told in this space before stories about idealistic young white liberals I know who chose to teach in predominantly or entirely black schools, where most of the students were poor, or relatively poor. All of them were traumatized by it. They were traumatized by the culture of contempt black teachers had at these white interlopers, and de facto contempt they had for their own black students, who favored racial solidarity over doing what was right by an individual black student (I'm thinking about the brilliant black kid at one of these schools who scored a perfect 1600 on his SAT, and who was encouraged to apply to the Ivies by his white teachers; the black guidance counselor instead convinced him to attend an academically bottom-of-the-barrel HBCU, out of a sense tribal obligation.)
And they were shocked by how difficult to impossible it was to engage poor black students who came from homes where, unlike the Hannah-Jones home, parents cared nothing about education. For that matter, I was once told a story by an older black woman from a family that felt strongly about education every one of her children earned advanced degrees who, on the day her youngest child told her that he had decided to stop with his master's, quit her job in the all-black public school where she had spent her lifetime teaching. She told me that she realized she no longer had to put up with these uncaring kids and parents who saw teachers as the Enemy, and treated them abusively.
Reading the NHJ essay, I thought back to an essay I read many years ago by Jim Schutze, the uber-liberal but spicy city columnist at the Dallas Observer. Jim used to give me hell for my conservative columns in the Dallas Morning News when I lived there. I remember, though, that Schutze, though a longtime fierce advocate for Dallas public schools ("DISD" is the acronym for them), wrote a piece that I cannot find online, in which he tartly observed that pretty much the only kinds of parents who showed up to demand that their kids' public schools be run better were white ones. As I recall, it pained him to admit it, but he did admit it.
I did find this Schutze column online, from the mid-2000s, in which he observed something similar to what NHJ does. Excerpt:
Quote:

For 30 years an unquestioned article of faith at DISD headquarters has been that too much emphasis on excellence leads to an unhealthy form of elitism. By this formula, excellence equals elitism equals racism. That's why, for example, the Talented and Gifted program has always been a sort of abused sibling within the family of programs at DISD.

NHJ ends her New York Times piece as only she could: by blaming "segregation" and the System. But what is a system made up of but people people who have certain ideas what education is?] - Rod Dreher

maybe, and for those that wouldn't sacrifice their own kids, most libs are complete hypocrites, they would just send and sacrifice other people's kids, and tell you it's the right thing. They don't give a rip about right or wrong, they only care what the TV tells them to care about.

Yep, liberal white men are too weak to stand up for what is right, so they just submit and start to believe nonsense.

Any man who says biological males belong in women's sports - definitely a liberal - and definitely not a real man. It's a litmus test. One of many, but that's just one of the easiest.

The fundamental problem is liberals oppose solving problems. The entire business model depends of keeping the grift going. Additionally, they view things like public schools as taxpayer-funded advocacy centers so they can pay teachers to agitate and do political work.

How can we make sure the adults do a good job...given that NYC spends around $50k on each student. Billions each year in fact in total budget.

We often hear this endless lament from the Left that we are not spending enough on the schools....

[NYC spends substantially on public education, making it the highest per-pupil expenditure among large urban school districts in the United States. Totally budge each year is approximately $43 billion to $45 billion total operating budget. More than 50% higher than other major urban districts like Los Angeles and Chicago, and far more than the U.S. national average of -$17,619.]

And if the Adults need to engage in discipline or even expelling the worst students to maintain order in these NYC schools. Would liberals support that or hider it?

This reminds me of the time last year a kid recorded his classmates trying to read a simple sentence and none of them could do it. High school seniors just weeks before graduation.

But people responded sort of like how 47 did. Instead of questioning why these kids had passed through the system, why the school was failing, etc. they went after the kid for filming without consent inside a school. They threatened him with not walking at graduation. Not addressing the issue of high school seniors about to get a diploma for merely showing up.

Or like the teacher in Houston that broke down on his social media (after school hours) about how his kids couldn't read or write a single sentence. Instead of addressing the problem he was put on leave and investigated....

My guess is that minority students also tend to live in higher-cost-of-living areas. As long as we are focusing on NYC, it is true that per-pupil spending there is much higher than the rest of the country. But so is per-latte Starbucks. And per-pupil private school spending.

That is not to say that NYC schools don't have tremendous institutional problems, or that the root cause of most of them is poor parenting. I believe both of those things to be true. But saying that NYC (or any big city) should have "average" per-pupil spending ignores economic reality.

Another example of blaming everything other than the system when schools in Chicago are empty. 27 students TOTAL attend a building built for 1,000 students.....

But people don't want to talk about how much is spent per student, the race of the students, the culture/community the school is in, the leaders, etc.

Many of you guys have the same blame-centric mindset that this looney has. Or had, because she put her money and even child where her mouth was, learned her error, and openly admitted it.

When all we seek is to blame, even our own failures fail to teach us anything. But there is something to be learned, and it is neither that the apathy and neglect of this forum towards the education of poor people works, nor that sacrificing the future of your child will work.

What can be gained, is the knowledge that each of us is ultimately responsible for ourselves, and our own, only. We can seek to help others, but what actually serves these poor and failing schools best, is to avoid them and seek the highest quality of education for ourselves and our own. We bring others up by setting the highest possible standard, not by debasing our children down to theirs.
