I'm concerned that we don't know if the numbers coming from China are accurate. China does seem to be taking pretty dramatic measures in attempt to stop the spread. That is reassuring and also kind of scary. If their numbers are accurate, the mortality rate doesn't seem too high. I have heard some people say corona virus tends to dissipate in the spring. So we can hope for that.

Mongolia and N. Korea have closed their borders to China.

They depend on China for most of their goods and energy needs...and its winter right now (bad time to have shortages of needed goods)

That to me says a lot.

These neighbors of China are basically saying in their actions (if not in their words) that they don't trust the Chinese authorities to tell them the truth in regards to the real scope of the outbreak.

I think we should impose a travel ban immediately on China......like right now today.

If 8 weeks from now things are more clear and it is not as bad as feared then we can lift it.

They are now expanding the lockdown. So not just Wuhan (the Chinese Chicago) but several other million person cites are basically under martial law with no one allowed in or out.

They are also shutting down the lunar new year celebrations country wide.....this is a very big deal. Chinese lunar new year is like our Thanksgiving, Christmas, and 4th of July all thrown into one big celebration.

Imagine if we had Chicago on lock down....along with 50 million other mid-westerners....and we where canceling thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations across the U.S.A

That gives you some idea of what is happening. Maybe its overreaction....maybe not.

I think that is what is responsible for the market sell off today. Business with China exposure (Disney theme park, Apple, Yum brands, etc.) bracing for fallout of Chinese lifestyle and business disruptions.

Chinese businessmen are notorious for not fulfilling their obligations after saying they will to your face.

Integrity and honesty is not part of their culture like English common law is, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are downplaying this thing.

I'm not sure anyone effected and being treated in a first world country has died. This could be related to level of care, health of the persons, and/or natural ability to fight it.

China is an odd country based on my one visit. It has places that are modern yet just a short distance away it's completely undeveloped. I was on a commuter train in Beijing and saw people in business suits standing next someone in traditional farm attire that had just come from the countryside with all his possessions hanging from a stick on his shoulder. I'm sure they could manage civil unrest by just sending some police and troops in, but to believe the central government can manage a sickness in a place with so many people and so many places that don't have full medical services is kinda ridiculous.

It may be much worse for the Chinese than it will be for anyone else.
