It feels good to care, to be in a noble fight against something evil. So if there isn't much evil out there, one must redefine the innocuous to represent something sinister, in order to justify a continued crusade against evil.
The urge to be better is one of mankind's most noble traits, and letting the effort do do so cross over into virtue posturing as better than others is one of mankind's most insidious flaws.
