WACO, Texas. – Baylor men’s tennis player Matias Soto will play for Team Chile in the Davis Cup for the second time in his career in September.

Soto last competed in the Davis Cup in March of 2020.

Team Chile will play Team Slovakia in Brastilava, Slovakia on September 17 and 18 in NTC Arena in the World Group I First Round. Chile is ranked 21st with 250.31 points while Slovakia is ranked 31st.

He joins Chilean team members Christian Garin, Nicolas Jarry, and Marcelo Tomas Barrios on the squad. Their captain is Nicolas Massu, former 9 ATP player and two-time Olympic gold medalist.

The Davis Cup is considered the ‘World Cup of Tennis’.

Previous Bears who have played in the Davis Cup are John Peers for Australia, and Jimmy Bendeck played for Honduras.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 editions of the competition have been combined. Results from the Qualifiers, World Group I Playoffs and World Group II Playoffs last year have been carried over into the 2021 competition.

The eight highest-ranked winning nations of World Group I ties in March/September 2021 will automatically progress to the 2022 Davis Cup by Rakuten Qualifiers. The four lowest-ranked winning nations will participate in an additional knock-out tie in November of 2021 with the two winners moving on to the 2022 Qualifiers, and the losers contesting in the 2022 World Group I Playoffs. The 12 losing nations in World Group I in 2021 will also contest the 2022 World Group I Playoffs.
