Ten Things: Baylor gets ugly win at Texas State

Ten things I saw in the game against Texas State:

  1. JT Woods‍ with a great play and a pick six to start the scoring for the season
  2. Need to protect the ball and Abram Smith‍ kills a drive
  3. Can’t lose Raleigh Texada as Texas State is going at Mark Milton‍ often
  4. This UAE commercial with the flight attendant on top of the building has better camera angles than this broadcast
  5. Pounding that rock is paying off with Abram Smith‍ and Trestan Ebner‍ gashing the Bobcat defense
  6. Offense is starting to gel and move the ball
  7. Defense finding it’s feet and starting to not overpursue
  8. Defensive pressure is leading to turnovers for Baylor as Jairon McVea gets an INT
  9. Predicted 34-17 and feel that was pretty close
  10. Dominated on the ground with 247 yards on 44 carries
  11. Still plenty to work on and learn from the film

Four dumb penalties: two on kickoffs and two where they made bad choices (celebrating the interception and shoving the quarterback). Those need to get cleaned up.

The lack of Baylor's ability to put a drive together late and go up 34-13, or at least 30-13 really changed the complexion of the game. Little things really add up. Didn't feel terribly impressed with game management and play calling, especially on that 3rd and 1 near the goal line.

Not sure they will be able to learn anything from film since the camera crew was horrible. Pretty sure ESPN grabbed a few local high schoolers and paid them $20 bucks to film the game.

But don't forget....Baylor takes their own film !!

Camera and graphics looked a little like Bishop Sycamore tried their hand at TV game production. We must be at the bottom of the barrel for Espn game assignments. Couldn't get a camera in focus often...

Glad for the defense - score is an even 20-20 without the defense getting on the board - remember we were playing Texas Sate, who won 2 games last year - yes, it was our first game, but it was Texas State's first game too - we played Texas State to a tie - it is a win and we will take it.

Too many damn penalties.

IMO, penalties and poor officiating cost us 3 or 4 TDs.

Still need to show some discipline.

Without the Pick Six, this game would have gone into OT.
And that's a disturbing thought about where the program may really be.

You're just playing 7 points there. Without the INT but with a pass breakup, we still get the ball on a punt and could very well drive down the field and take a 7-0 lead. Every play creates its own new set of circumstances.

The point is we made the INT because of a great defensive play. You're implying that the INT was luck.

You need to look at everything else, which includes 2 backs over 100 yards each. Holding TSU to under 250 total yards, etc.

I don't know if we'll win enough to go to a bowl this year, but I'm not disturbed about the program. I think we are slowly going in the right direction.

Exactly MR - 11 penalties, 10 of which I think were on the defense, keep Tx State drives alive and ended in points they should not of had, I suspect CDA will have a serious "come to Jesus" with the defense this week.

Don't forget we had a TD catch which the refs didn't catch and there was no replay to overturn it.

There was definitely a lot to work on, but as the game progressed, I thought the offense was looking much better and Bohanon was getting better his executions both passing and rushing. I don't believe he got sacked and was able to have time in the pocket, which says a lot about the improvement of the OL It is good that we have lesser opponents in the first 3 games because we have a lot of new players learning the system and impoving their skills.

There were too many unnecessary penalties, but hopefully that will be corrected.

I think it is reasonable to expect both offense and defense will improve during the season.

I was impressed too with that QB from Texas State. He looked to me like someone who could play Big 12 football.

4 separate penalties gave Texas State free first downs.

Special teams alone had:

2 kicks out of bounds, allowing them to start on the 35 yard line.
1 Roughing the punter, which led to 3 free points they would not have had.
1 holding call on a fair catch, backing us up
1 holding call on a return (13 yard penalty)

That's off the top of my head. There may have been another penalty or two on special teams to add to that.

Other than the ill-timed penalties, I generally liked what I saw out there. This really should have been 21-28 point win against a TX State team with a few impact transfers. State should have a few more wins than they did last season.

Please don't start the excuse making game at Game 1. At least wait for a significant game....where perhaps Baylor is the underdog. Those games are all coming in a couple of weeks. There'll be plenty to make excuses about.
