Baylor avoides sweep in finale against No. 6 Texas Tech

The Baylor baseball team (19-10) heads into another tough weekend slate after dropping a road series against Washington (1-2) last weekend before dropping their midweek game to Lamar 11-1 on Wednesday at home.

Now the Bears will resume Big 12 play in a road series against No. 6 Texas Tech.

First pitch of the series opener is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday with the second game of the series set for 2 p.m. Saturday. The Bears and the Red Raiders will play the series finale on Sunday the at 2 p.m.

The Bears are now ranked seventh in the Big 12 with a winning percentage of .655 and a conference record of 2-4, while the Red Raiders are tied for second in the Big 12 with a record of 4-2 and a winning percentage of .813.

Baylor is currently 5-4 against ranked teams this season and has dropped their last three weekend series.

In the Bears’ series loss last weekend to Washington, Baylor recorded three home runs in the series finale on Sunday and secured a 6-3 win to avoid a sweep. Freshman catcher Shea Langliers had the first two homers of the contest and senior designated hitter Matt Menard had the third. Langliers and Menard currently lead the team with 33 hits each this season.

Junior pitcher Troy Montemayor also had his seventh save of the season against Washington, with 21 overall career saves.

In Wednesday’s loss to Lamar, Langliers extended his on-base streak to 10 games, and junior shortstop Tucker Cascadden notched his fourth multi-hit game this season.

Going into this weekend’s matchup, the Red Raiders lead the Bears 84-78 in their all-time series. Tech is starting freshman pitcher John Henry Gonzalez (2-2) on Friday, who has recorded 14 strikeouts this season. The Bears will also have to watch out for the Big 12’s leader in hits, doubles and total bases, senior Hunter Hargrove.

The Bears will stay in Waco next week with a Tuesday night matchup against Sam Houston State, and then a Thursday through Saturday series against UT.
