Kendall Brown Wins Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Baylor freshman Kendall Brown has been tabbed Big 12 Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week, as voted on by a panel of media members and announced Monday by the league office.
 
A Cottage Grove, Minn., native, Brown picked up his career-first Big 12 weekly award. He becomes the first Bear to win the award since Macio Teague on Feb. 10, 2020, and the first BU freshman since Jared Butler on Feb. 25, 2019.
 
Brown led the Bears to a 78-70 victory, their first road win of the season, against Oregon on Saturday in Eugene. He tied for the team-high with 17 points to go along with four rebounds.

Forced to the bench in the first half with foul trouble, Brown scored 15 second-half points, including a stretch where he scored nine points as part of Baylor’s 12-0 run to turn a 51-51 tie into a 63-51 lead.

The first player in program history to be named Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Brown has now scored in double-figures and recorded at least one steal in nine of his 10 games at Baylor.

The freshman has started all 10 games and ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game, which is 12th-best in the Big 12 Conference. Last month, Brown was named to the Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament Team after helping the Bears sweep three games to claim the tournament title.

Brown is the 25th different player in program history to be named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Those 25 players have combined to win the award 38 times in the Big 12’s 26-year history.
 
The top-ranked Bears will return to action on Monday at 6 p.m. CT against Alcorn State in their final game before Christmas. BU then hosts Northwestern State at 7 p.m. on Dec. 28, before opening Big 12 play on the road at No. 11 Iowa State at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
