No. 8 Baylor dropped by No. 10 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse 83-59

No. 8 Baylor suffered its first road loss in conference play against No. 10 Kansas in Lawrence 83-59.

Allen Fieldhouse is a perennial program killer in college basketball, and that was no different today. The Bears started ahead 2-0, but it was all Jayhawks from that point — literally.

The first half was grueling. Past that 2-0 start, Kansas outscored Baylor 39-19 for the remainder of the 20 minute period. That’s a run wihtin itself. The home team put in on. Baylor shot just 8-31 to start and 2-14 from deep. A 10-0 deficit in points off turnovers and 28-10 in points in the paint didn’t help.

The second half was much of the same. Scott Drew got a technical. Things were that bad. Moreover, rather than igniting a fire within the Bears, the team took a nosedive.

In all, the Bears shot 21-71 for the game. Baylor missed 50 shots. Drew’s squad finished 7-27 from deep. Rebounds favored Kansas by nine, paint points by 22 and shooting perfentage by 22%. That's no recipe for success.

Kansas defends its court and wins 83-59.

On to Kansas State in Manhattan Wednesday. It’s not easy, but it's not Allen.

The whole program since Self has been there is dirty. It's well documented.

Seemed like an accurate description to me. What did you watch?

I think everybody KNEW early in the season we had zero post game, no plays that run through the paint, but we were shooting lights out and playing great D. Villanova was the climax of the year except for the offense.

The injuries obviously don't help, but every team has them and you have to have players who can play big time in those situations and we just do not.

For the record, I cannot fault Flagler, Cryer, JTT, or Sochan. Everybody else is a disappointment. I don't know how Drew pulls out of this or if he can. If by miracles, we go back and watch film of the Villanova game and prior to that and figure out why we were so deadly defensively maybe they can salvage the season. That is what makes college bball so much better to me than football. You are always in it until you're not.

We know this team has it in them, but I don't if they will reconnect bc we are on a downward trajectory now and I don't see any signs of making a run. Then again, anything is possible although the odds are really stacked against us.

I remember in recent years Drew has essentially reinvented the team mid-season (term used by TV announcers; I cannot think of a better one) because of injuries (ie Clark) with amazing results. Can he do it again? I don't know. But if that's what it takes, I hope so.

The players in this game? Nope.

The officials? Probably.

You're just letting off steam, right?

Akinjo, Thamba & Brown have "disappointed you?"

What WERE your expectations after losing three INCREDIBLE, NBA talented starters and Vital, one of our best players of all time?

This hodgepodge of freshmen, big men & transfers has exceeded ALL expectations (except yours).

I'm very impressed and even more BU-Scott Drew-proud.

Several people have expressed disappointment or frustration with Brown & Akinjo, especially the latter. We may have had too high expectations of Brown. Maybe we paid too much attention to the hype. I still think he would benefit from sticking around for another year.

To echo BuNation, what exactly were your expectations of Akinjo and Brown and how have they fallen short?

Akinjo was playing like big 12 newcomer of the year, leading us to a 15-0 start before the injury. I'm sorry he has disappointed you by getting injured and trying to play through it.

And how exactly has Brown fallen short? What hype are your referring to? As has been posted over and over again, Brown is and will never be a volume scorer, so how has he been a disappointment? The last 5 games in particular he has been quietly excellent, averaging around 10 pts. 8 reb. and taking on more responsibilty offensively with his ability to drive and pass the ball.

To this point I hope we see more of KB as a point forward to take advantage of his court vision and passing skill, and to avoid Akinjo having to initiate 100% of the offense when he clearly still isn't 100%.

IIRC, Brown was seen as a first rounder, despite limited D1 experience. I always thought those kinds of projections to be silly.

Yes, if KB is a one and done player as projected then he has not impressed. Thamba, in stretches, has played weill, but for a senior with as many games played as he has...he has not impressed. Akinjo, has not impressed IF I put the injury to the side and just look at his box score. I'm sure there are others who think like I do as well.

Just saying that is my opinion and you are welcome to yours. Whatever the case, I do consider this is to be an OFF year in a dynamic program by Drew, if that is what ends up happening. It's a shame really bc the team that won the Battle for Atlantis and clamped down on Nova is a great team.

Tough crowd. An off year despite the fact we still have a shot at a #1 seed, and despite being ravaged by injury.
