NCAA FIRST AND SECOND ROUND NOTABLES
• Baylor is 19-1 all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Since dropping its first first-round contest in 2001, the Bears have strung together 18-straight dubs in the opening round of NCAA play.
• BU is 16-2 in NCAA Second Round play.
• Baylor has never faced South Dakota - who picked up its first NCAA Tournament win in program history with Friday's victory over Ole Miss.
• Baylor set a new school record in NCAA play with 43 defensive rebounds against Hawaii. The Bears were two points for tying the eighth-best scoring mark in an NCAA Tournament game in program history.
• Jordan Lewis tied for fifth all-time in NCAA tourney play with her 7-for-8 showing from the floor on Friday.
• For the first time in program history, Baylor had two players pull down 14 rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game. NaLyssa Smith and Queen Egbo each had 14.
• Jaden Owens tied her career high with three steals vs. Hawaii.
• Baylor tied the fifth-best mark in program history in an NCAA Tournament game with 56 boards.
• BU is hosting the first and second rounds for the 10th time in program history. Baylor hosted from 2013-19 with the streak ending a season ago due to the entire tournament being held in San Antonio because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

NCAA NOTABLES
• Baylor was named a No. 2 seed, marking the 11th-straight year that BU is at least a two seed or higher.
• The Bears are making their 18th-straight NCAA appearance, a streak that ranks 13th all-time and is the fifth-longest active streak.
• Baylor has advanced to 20 NCAA Tournaments all-time.
• Baylor is 54-16 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
• Baylor earned trips to the Final Four in 2005, 2010, 2012 and 2019. BU won the NCAA titles in 2005, 2012 and 2019.

• NaLyssa Smith, named to the all-tournament team, went off for a career-best 37 points in the semifinal win over Oklahoma. That mark is good for second in Big 12 championship semifinal history.
• Caitlin Bickle also had a career day against Oklahoma with 21 points.
• Baylor's 91 points against the Sooners tied for fourth-most all-time in a Big 12 semifinal contest.
• Baylor set a Big 12 Championship record with two turnovers. That mark also tied a program record that was set on Feb. 1, 2014, against Texas.
• Baylor set a program record, a Big 12 Championship record and tied an NCAA record when it held Oklahoma State scoreless in the first quarter of the Big 12 quarterfinal vs. Oklahoma State.
• Overall, BU held Oklahoma State to 36 points, a Big 12 Championship record and won by 40 points, which stands for second in league tournament win margin.

QUICK HITS
• Baylor clinched a share of the regular-season Big 12 title with a 25-point win at then-No. 8 Iowa State in front of a record crowd at Hilton Coliseum.
• BU's streak of 12 regular-season titles is the longest active streak in the country in men's AND women's hoops.
• The streak ties for fourth all-time in WBB history behind Green Bay (20, 1999-18); Louisiana Tech (15, 2003-17); Stanford (14, 2001-14) and Old Dominion (12, 1993-04).
• Baylor became the first school since Texas Tech in 2000 to start league play 0-2 and end up winning the conference title.
• Baylor racked up conference honors as every member of the starting five received recognition. Smith was the unanimous pick for Player of the Year, receiving the honor in back-to-back seasons. Jordan Lewis became the fourth-straight Bear to pick up Newcomer of the Year. Smith and Lewis were each named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Sarah Andrews received Second Team honors, while Asberry and Queen Egbo were named Honorable Mention.
• Smith has already been named a first-team All-American by three different entities this season - Sports Illustrated, The Athletic and the Associated Press.
• Smith is third in the country with 24 double-doubles. That mark sets a program record for double-doubles in a single season. She's third in BU history with 52 career double-doubles.
• The senior is top-10 nationally with 22.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
• Smith reached the 2,000 career point / 1,000 career rebound mark this season.
• Baylor has now set a program record for 3s made (221) and 3s attempted (631) in a single season.

I think it does in this instance. If you research it, you'll see her mom quoted in several features saying that her daughter's goal is the WNBA and that is one of the key things they are using to assess where she will transfer. Obviously it's not something that sways everyone but apparently in this case there is a possibility it could.

Not at all a fan of the lack of urgency and body language exhibited by the lady Bears in the second half of the quarter. The men at least exhibited some "want to", the lady bears acted as though they couldn't care less.

In some ways, we have been spoiled by our own success. It really stings to lose a game in this manner. I'm still a BU fan till the end, though. I remember when all of our programs were pretty bad, so we really do have a lot to be grateful for these days.

Not trying to make excuses - there is no excuse for a 2 seed from the Big 12 getting eliminated in round 2 on their home floor to a 10 seed from the Horizon Conference - but I'm wondering if the impact of for all intents and purposes having a 7 man roster finally came home to roost. That team looked totally spent and exhausted by the 4th quarter today like there was literally nothing left in the tank for a come back.

Mentioned this earlier today and also mid season. The west and tear of the body would pop up when we couldn't afford it. Felt it was sneaking in during out OKSt win a few weeks back. Bodies can only take so much of 37-38 minute games. Which is why I always say UCONN has an advantage with their conference schedule. It's often just another practice. So they are more fresh than others. When Notre Dane was in their conference they were a bit more worn come tournament time. But they always have fresh legs. But yes. A seven man roster, no matter who it is, will comeback to haunt you. ND won the natty with a short bench, but the bench became short during the post season. Wasn't like that all season long.

Total collapse? The men came back from 25 down to force OT. Did you even watch that game?

More depth will definitely help. It is hard to play only 7 players for an entire season in very physical games. Sarah has been playing with wrist injury, Jaden turned ankle in game, and I wonder if Nalyssa was 100%. Nicki said she was not really well on Friday.

Nicki should have more depth next year and that will help.

This'll be a critical offseason for CNC. A Big 12 regular season title is good, but getting outsed before the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2008 with the projected #1 pick in the draft is not. Losing Lewis and Egbo hurt depth even more than it already was, so i'm hoping that she crashes the transfer portal hard or recruit at a extreme level in order to balance out

No but she did loose to a 7 seed in her second season. And there is more parity now. Worth noting. And that game was very similar. Couldn't make a shot and the team didn't come out ready to play.

It's obvious to anyone with real knowledge of basketball - the season with a short bench finally caught up with the BU WBB - it was obvious - no legs - gas tank on empty but the heart was there. It was a nice run while it lasted - personally I am going to enjoy that and see what CNC and Staff can bring in from the portal.

Thats understandable, but that team we just played would lose 10 games in the Big 12 conference! They were not good imo, we just played even worse.

It just sucks to lose to teams that I know for a fact will go on to get steamrolled by a team that wasn't even as good as us

Shouldn't have trouble getting up for a 32 match-up at home. I think the S.D. coach totally took us out of our offense, and we had no adjustment. The middle looked open most of the game for a jumper from the free- throw area, but that's not our offense. You can live or die by the three. Today we died. 5-26 being 19.2 percent from teh three.

Honestly, I think all of you are being too hard on both men and women's teams. Yea we got beat. Both games were disappointing. Our teams were outplayed on the floor but other good teams are losing in this tournament. All is not lost. Our coaches are good coaches. The teams we played were better, on these game days. Let's give the opponents some credit and acknowledge the world is not coming to an end. We will be back. #sicem

To be fair I've always struggled to see Queen as a force in the paint. She's tall and long but hasn't done well with contact. Several holes to fill in the portal. Gotta hit the pavement. And hopefully this one stings long and hard. Disappointing end to a roller coaster season.
I agree on Queen.

And for my opinion, what I saw today was a team that was both physically and mentally exhausted. They have been through the ringer ever since Mulkey bolted. They got punched in the face from the outset and just couldn't recover. We had enough shots, many right at the basket that rolled off or out to have won the game. If you can't put the ball in the hole, you are not going to win. And if your shots aren't falling and the other team's are, it just makes the mental part a lot tougher.

As someone else mentioned the Baylor program has had an achilles heal of trying to beat a three point shooting team that is on in the NCAA tourney, and more often than not our exits from the NCAAs have been to such teams. We lost to Oregon state twice in basically the same manner we lost today. And if you recall, we almost lost to a South Dakota State team in the second round when they were not awarding the home courts to the top 16.

Hopeful that having taller guards and ones that can be depended on to make the 3 with better consistency will allow us to play better against such teams. I don't care who you have down low, if the outside shooters don't have to be respected, that person is going to get triple teamed and will never be able to get the ball.

Sorry the seniors had to go out like this, but they kept us afloat all season and my hat goes off to them. Looking forward to the hope that next season will be a more normal season, with a normal roster size, and fresh capable bodies that can start the program back up fresh and experienced players via the portal that can bring the freshmen along.

We have some REALLY lousy fans. The amount of shade thrown at CNC on here is horrible. I do expect that most of the people that give such harsh criticism are just die hard Mulkey fans. Winning a conference championship in her first year with a small roster is impressive in my opinion. Nalyssa was not 100% tonight and Jade Owens rolled an ankle in the first half. Not to use injuries as excuses, we did play poorly on top of these things.

All in all it was a good season that sadly ended way too soon. I'll say my CNC judgement after her first full year of recruiting and building the roster back up. Have some faith. Sic em

"Milky" almost lost to Jackson State and it would have been the first time a 14 beat a 3.

But that aside, the common denominator in our getting bounced today and in the S16s and Elite 8s with KM where we got bounced and were the heavy favorite to make it to the FF was a hot shooting team, especially from behind the line. Our program thus far apparently has just not been built to deal with those types of teams. Since our recruiting focus is now changed, we'll see in the next few years if it makes a difference.

We were shooting 3s well all season until the last few weeks. Legs (and Sarah's hand) have got to have something to do with it. I think we got as far along as we could with bailing wire for not having a full roster. Look how we did with ISU this year. We were hitting outside and it completely opened up the middle.

The team will benefit from the fresh start next year.....but the biggest obstacle to equaling past successes will be the parity now present in the game.

Perhaps your team was fresh. Perhaps they had the energy to expend but were just lazy. You have no idea what the physical and mental state of this team was going into today. We may have been lucky this year to carry it this far. If the horse is barely standing, lighting a fire under its butt is only going to result in hamburgers being served in shady countries.

Someone mentioned the middle was open. We couldn't even make shots 4 feet from the basket. It wasn't the offense, it was the lid on the basket for us.

People keep looking to throw shade at Collen any chance they can.

She walked into a broke roster with zero depth. She won a Big 12 title her first season (Kim didn't). She has an elite class coming in and is just getting started.

Kim cult people are the worst. She had success here but she was an average coach who's reign was coming to an end, she could no longer bring in elite recruits. Her system was stale and predictable. The coaching change was best for Baylor in the long run. Nicki will get things on track but we have to be patient and trust the process.

Sorry, that is the offense but for some reason Lewis and Andrews forced passes and drove into double teams passing up the open shot space ???? - Smith tried once from her favorite spot vs Notre Dame and it looked like a dying quail.

This year, I think the main problem was the lack of depth and by the end of the season they were just plain tired. Lyssa, particularly, seemed not to be playing at 100% in the tournament. It showed in the first half vs Hawaii then she had an amazing 3rd quarter. I now wonder if she was playing through the pain or whatever the issue. She certainly did not seem herself today.

On the other hand, the Coyotes came to play. They were physical and tough and outplayed us all game. That much is clear.
