'6 Pack of Bear': J.T. Woods a part of Baylor's biggest recruiting day
Cibolo Steele High School has produced its share of talented players in previous years. The top 2018 recruits include the duo of running back Brenden Brady and cornerback JayVeon Cardwell -- who have nearly 40 offers combined -- and Texas safety commit Caden Sterns.
Baylor commit J.T. Woods is a Steele product ready to show his worth while donning a green and gold uniform. At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Woods is a safety pledge who fits in well with Baylor's "#BFast" movement, as he also was a state track and field qualifier in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 100-meter dash.
Woods committed to Baylor on April 30, considered the best recruiting day, results wise, in coach Matt Rhule's young tenure. Woods was the second of four athletes to commit on that day, and he helped Baylor's recruiting skyrocket.
Woods is the subject for the latest "Six Pack of Bear," and he discusses the tradition of his high school, being a part of an exciting class, the immediate future and much more.
YOU PLAY FOR A PROGRAM IN STEELE THAT'S HAD ITS SHARE OF TALENT THE LAST FEW YEARS. WHAT'S IT LIKE PLAYING FOR STEELE?
"I think the best part about it is it you get to see other great athletes. It's not just one or two athletes, but the entire team is full of athletes. It's very competitive. The coaches always have to tell us to take it down a notch. We all just want to win, and sometimes, we forget about that because we're so competitive."
YOU WERE A PART OF BAYLOR'S BIGGEST RECRUITING DAY OF THE CURRENT CYCLE. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE ONE OF FOUR COMMITS ON APRIL 30?
"It was very exciting. It kind of showed the other recruits that this was the start of something very special. I think it laid a foundation for other recruits, as well. Once we committed, others were looking to help get the ball rolling. I'm hoping this is the start of something great."
TELL ME ABOUT BAYLOR. WHAT WAS IT THAT INITIALLY WON YOU OVER?
"When I first walked on campus, I knew it was something else. Once I had the chance to talk to the coaches, it was if I was one of their own children, They made me latch on. I could tell talking to them, it wasn't just about football at Baylor. When a Baylor coach is coaching up players, they're not just coaching them for football; they're coaching them to be better men. That's what I'm looking for in a program."
MATT RHULE HAS DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB IN RECRUITING. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS OF HIM ON AND OFF THE FIELD?
"On the field, he's very energetic, very enthusiastic. He shows that he cares, which I saw early on. Off the field, the way he talks, he shows he's a very positive person. I think he's really going to turn Baylor around."
YOU CAN PLAY SAFETY, CORNERBACK AND NICKELBACK. WHERE ARE YOU MOST COMFORTABLE, AND WHAT SHOULD THE FANS EXPECT OUT OF YOU?
"I can even play a little linebacker. I'm very confident in my abilities, but I still have a lot to work on. If a coach puts me in a position to be successful, I can play anywhere you need me. I feel most comfortable at safety because I've played it so long. I can analyze the field and see everything in front of me."
AS GOOD AS YOU ARE IN FOOTBALL, YOU ALSO ARE DYNAMIC IN TRACK AND FIELD -- MUCH LIKE SEVERAL OF THE GUYS IN BAYLOR'S 2018 CLASS. WHAT'S IT LIKE SEEING SO MANY TRUE ATHLETES AS FUTURE TEAMMATES?
"That definitely gets me even more excited. I think dual-sport athletes are the future of NCAA football. Seeing a football player and a dual-sport guy being committed to the same school I'm at, it makes me that much more confident that we will run the Big 12 one day.
