88 Days till Kickoff: The Baylor Football single game completion percentage record

As always, keep track of both the stats and roster countdowns in the Offseason Hub!

On September 24, 2011, Robert Griffin III and Bryce Petty combined to go 31-for35 passing against the rice Owls. That mark, 88.57%, set a school record for completion percentage in a game.

Baylor would go on to win the game 56-31, but I’d like to focus on what the future might have in store for the Baylor Bears.

Griffin on his own had an 87.88% completion percentage, about five and a half points better than Blake Shapen’s impressive mark in the Big 12 Championship game last December.

Shapen was 23-for-28 after starting the game 17-for-17, which was both a Big 12 Championship game record and an AT&T Stadium record at all levels. The Shreveport, Louisiana native even sustained a shoulder injury — which would keep him from competing for playing time in the Sugar Bowl — before completing four more passes.

In fact, four of Shapen’s five incompletions came on the Bears’ last drive of the first half, which stalled just outside of the red zone with under a minute to play. Three of those passes were shots to the end zone.

If two of Shapen’s incompletions had been completions, then he would have broken the record. The same goes if he had just not thrown the ball on three of those pass attempts that hit the ground. But I digress.

In a different world on December 4, 2021, Shapen has possibly the best day any quarterback has ever had in a Baylor uniform and sets an almost insurmountable record for completion percentage in a game. But in this world, we will just have to wait and see it during the 2022 football season.
