77 Days till Kickoff: Four 77-yard Plays
As always, keep track of both the stats and roster countdowns in the Offseason Hub!
The 2021 Baylor football almanac, published before last season, lists 4 passing plays of 77 yards in its record of longest passing plays.
The first was a pass from Neal Jeffrey to Brian Kilgore at Colorado in 1973. It was a bright spot in an otherwise tough 52-28 loss to the Buffaloes during Teaff’s 2-9 second season as Baylor head coach.
The second was courtesy of our very own SicEm365 football contributor, J.J. Joe. He connected with receiver Melvin Bonner for a 77-yard score in the Bears’ 38-21 victory over the Cougars in 1991. Baylor finished that season 8-4 with a loss in the Copper Bowl in Tuscan, Arizona.
More recently, Robert Griffin III hit Terrance Williams down the sideline of Kyle Field to give Baylor a 14-10 lead over the Aggies. That 2011 matchup would end with a rough scoreline of 55-28 in favor of the home team, but the Bears would still finish 10-3 with an Alamo Bowl championship and the Heisman Trophy winner.
Lastly, in 2012 Terrance Williams found himself on the receiving end of another 77-yard touchdown pass against an in-state rival. This time it was at home against TCU, but the Bears were sadly on the losing end yet again, 49-21. Nick Florence was the quarterback this time around, but back to Williams: If I had a nickel for every time Terrance Williams caught a 77-yard TD, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
