The No. 19 Bears scored a record-high 73 points in a blowout win over West Virginia on October 5, 2013. Baylor broke the Big 12 and school record with 864 yards on the afternoon, 468 of which were rushing and 396 passing.
2013’s contest was a rematch of the highest-scoring Big 12 game of all time that took place the year prior. However, the No. 9 Mountaineers came away victorious in 2012 with a 70-63 win. Nick Florence had 581 passing yards and a touchdown that day, but he was outdueled by Geno Smith, who had 687 combined yards along with 8 TDs.
The 2013 game got off to a quick start when Bryce Petty connected with Antwan Goodley for a 61-yard touchdown 40 seconds into the game to put the Bears on the board 7-0.
Five scores later, the Bears led 42-7 halfway through the second quarter. By then, the game was essentially over. The green and gold ended up demolishing the Mountaineers in their Big 12 opener 73-42.
Bryce Petty completed 17 of 25 passes for 247 yards with two TDs and had one of Baylor’s school record-tying eight rushing touchdowns. Lache Seastrunk had 15 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns, while Shock Linwood added 14 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown of his own.
Even though the 73 points the Bears hung on West Virginia was a Big 12 record in the modern era, Baylor also put up a whopping 103 points against Hardin-Simmons in 1917.
