32 Days till Kickoff: Baylor’s #32 Carmello Jones
As always, keep track of both the stats and roster countdowns in the Offseason Hub!
Carmello Jones is a freshman linebacker from Mobile, Alabama. He will have three or four years of eligibility remaining, depending on if he redshirts the 2022 season. Jones is a great athlete, and Baylor’s website has him listed at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds.
Our own Travis Roeder had this to say about Jones when he committed to BU “another guy whose frame and skillset perfectly fits a position at Baylor, Jones is a twitchy, explosive, fluid athlete 6-foot-2 with a massive wingspan and long arms. He’s exactly what Baylor is looking for at JACK. The JACK is Baylor’s outside linebacker who primarily sets the edge in the run game, drops into coverage, and rushes the passer.”
Travis went on to add that Jones exclusively played defensive end in high school, so it may take a few years for him to get his feet underneath him, but he believes he will contribute at a high level as an upperclassman and ranked him as an A+ prospect.
Coming out of West Orange-Stark High School, Jones was named the 2021 District 11-4A Division II Defensive Player of the Year. As a senior, he helped lead his team to an 11-2 record and the fourth round of the state playoffs. As a junior, he recorded 75 tackles, 10.0 TFLs, nine sacks, and forced a pair of fumbles. He was a three-star prospect, the No. 57 edge player in the nation, and the No. 140 overall recruit in the state of Texas, according to 247. Jones committed to Baylor over Texas Tech, Utah, and Washington State in the class of 2022.
