28 Days till Kickoff: Baylor's 28 head football coaches

August 6, 2022

Since the Baylor Football program began in 1899, the Bears have had 28 men serve as head coach of the Bears. Dave Aranda is the latest and perhaps could end up as the greatest. He has already guided the program to its best record ever at 12-2 last season, and there is a good amount of buzz and momentum surrounding the program heading into 2022 as the favorites in the Big 12.

Coach Aranda has a 14-9 record or .609 winning percentage, which is good for 8th best in Baylor history. His tenure in the position is already longer than 11 others, and at the end of this upcoming season, he will have been the Bears’ head coach for as many or more seasons than 15 former head coaches.

The timeline of Baylor football head coaches is as follows:

  1. R.H. Hamilton - 1899-1900
  2. W.J. Ritchie - 1901
  3. J.C. Ewing - 1902
  4. R.N. Watts - 1903
  5. Sol Metzger - 1904
  6. Archie Webb - 1905
  7. Luther Burleson - 1907
  8. E.J. Mills - 1908-09
  9. Ralph Glaze - 1910-12
  10. Norman Paine - 1913
  11. Charles P. “Bubs” Mosley - 1914-19
  12. Frank Bridges - 1920-25
  13. Morley Jennings - 1926-40
  14. Frank Kimbrough - 1941-42, 1945-46
  15. Bob Woodruff - 1947-49
  16. George Sauer - 1950-55
  17. Sam Boyd - 1956-58
  18. John D. Bridgers - 1959-68
  19. Bill Beall - 1969-71
  20. Grant Teaff - 1972-92
  21. Chuck Reedy - 1993-96
  22. Dave Roberts - 1997-98
  23. Kevin Steele - 1999-2002
  24. Guy Morriss - 2003-07
  25. Art Briles - 2008-15

The legendary R.H. Hamilton still reigns supreme with his .714 winning percentage and as the only coach with an undefeated season in Baylor history.

The question remains --- When is that R.H. Hamilton statue going up?
Well I ain't no greenhorn!!

I ,somewhat randomly , googled Sol Metzger, who only coached football for Baylor one year.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Metzger

Reading about Sol, I realized how passionate fans have been about the game since the early "leatherhead " games.

Fans, like me ,crave victories.

Another interesting Baylor Head Coach:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Bridges#:~:text=Frank%20Bogart%20Bridges%20Sr.,1927%20to%201929%2C%20and%20St.

Frank Bridges- A Harvard Grad, came to Baylor and coached Baylor to its first two SWC championships:

1922 and 1924.

Baylor did not win another SWC Championship until the legendary 1974 Championship under Grant Teaff.
