15 Days till Kickoff: Baylor’s #15s Kyron Drones & Tripp Mitchell

Kyron Drones is a redshirt freshman quarterback from Pearland, Texas. Drones should have three years of eligibility remaining past this season, and BU’s website has him listed at 6-foot-2, 222 pounds. This fall, Drones will likely be QB2 behind Blake Shapen.

Todd Nickle
Drones had a solid performance in the Green and Gold game.

Our own Travis Roeder believes the offense is in good hands if Drones were to have to play serious minutes, “both Jeff Grimes and Dave Aranda stated that Kyron Drones was the most improved player of the Spring… he overall played well behind a shaky second-string OL. A Kyron Drones offense looks a lot like a Gerry Bohanon offense, except that Drones is a better runner and should be a more consistent thrower downfield. The key for him will be whether he has the savvy and leadership to consistently lead the offense if he needs to.”

Drones redshirted the 2021 season but made an appearance in the game against Texas Tech and picked up a crucial fourth and one. He also appeared in the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma State and did not record a stat.

Drones starred at Shadow Creek High School, totaling 1,239 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in only six games as a senior. As a junior, Drones recorded 3,390 passing yards and 46 touchdowns and led Shadow Creek to a UIL State Championship and a 16-0 record. He also earned Offensive MVP honors in the state championship, was named the District 10-5A MVP, and was a third-team All-State selection. Drones was a four-star recruit, the No. 20 player in Texas, the No. 125 player nationally, and the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback, according to 247. Drones was a huge pickup in the class of 2021 for the Bears. He chose Baylor over Ole Miss, Auburn, and TCU.

Tripp Mitchell is a junior wide receiver from Camarillo, California. Baylor’s website has him listed at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, and he should have one year of eligibility remaining past this season. While at BU, he’s majoring in risk management and insurance and has made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll an impressive five times.

He did not play in a game in 2021 and redshirted the 2020 season. As a true freshman in 2019, Mitchell made his Baylor debut against SFA and also appeared in the game against UTSA.

At Oaks Christian School as a senior, Mitchell led his team to a 12-1 record and rushed for 227 yards and eight touchdowns. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Mitchell totaled 1,625 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 277 rushing yards.
