Baylor Volleyball’s Carlson Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Baylor volleyball’s Averi Carlson was named Rookie of the Week by the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday, earning her first-career weekly award by the organization.

Carlson, the starting setter for the Bears, earned the accolade after recording 78 assists overall for her squad against No. 5 Minnesota and No. 3 Wisconsin over the weekend. Her 78 assists were the most out of any setter in the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge.

The Lucas, Texas, native was named to the All-Tournament Team after the conclusion of the Challenge, one of only two freshmen to earn the honor.

In addition, Carlson had one ace and two kills for the weekend, both coming against the Badgers.

Head coach Ryan McGuyre described Carlson as being “steady” throughout her first weekend of play against the top-five opponents.

The last Bear to earn the honor was now-sophomore Elise McGhee on Oct. 27, 2021.

Carlson and the Bears continue tournament play, facing Pepperdine, San Diego State and Santa Barbara at Pepperdine’s Firestone Fieldhouse from Sept. 1-3 in Malibu, Calif.
