IRVING, Texas – Baylor volleyball’s Riley Simpson earned her first weekly award from the Big 12 Conference, being named Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after her performance in three matches at the Pepperdine Asics Classic.

Simpson, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native, played in all 11 sets over the three matches on the weekend, getting the starting nod in two of them.

She averaged 3.27 kills per set in Malibu with 36 kills overall, just one shy of tying the team-high 37 kills from Lauren Harrison. The redshirt freshman also registered nine blocks over the three matches, averaging a block per set in the match with San Diego State. She led the team in kills and points for two out of the three matches. Her .329 attack percentage was second-best on the team for those with 10 or more kills on the weekend, behind only senior Kara McGhee.

The outside hitter had double-digit kills in each of the first two matches, with 13 against Pepperdine and 14 against San Diego State. She had nine kills against UC Santa Barbara. In the match with SDSU, she registered 3.5 kills per set and had a .407 attack percentage, along with four blocks and an ace.

UP NEXT

The Bears will return to their home court of the Ferrell Center to face Colorado State, Arizona State and Evansville, respectively, in the Baylor Classic that will run Sept. 8-10 in Waco.
