Baylor Soccer’s Reneta Vargas Named Big 12 Freshman of the Week
WACO, Texas — Baylor soccer’s Reneta Vargas has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. This marks the second Big 12 weekly award for the Bears this season.
Vargas’ honor is the fourth Freshman of the Week award in Baylor history, after Olivia Mack and Mackenzie Anthony both received the honor in 2020 and Hallie Augustyn picked up the award earlier this season.
The freshman forward scored three goals in two games last week, the first goals of her career. Making her first two career starts after overcoming an injury that kept her out to start the season, Vargas netted two goals in the Bears’ 3-2 victory over Kansas, including the game-winner in the final seconds. She also tabbed the Bears’ lone goal against Kansas State.
As a true freshman, she has now played in the last three games for the Bears and is tied for a team-high in goals with three. Three of her four shots last week were on goal.
Vargas joins Trinity Byars, Texas (Offensive), Cameron Brooks, Texas (Defensive) and Savannah Madden, Texas (Goalkeeper) as this week’s award winners.
Baylor goes on a two-game road swing this week, facing Iowa State on Thursday and then West Virginia Sunday.
