In the Web: What "They" are saying about Baylor in Week 7

Heading into Thursday night’s game against West Virginia (3-3, 1-2), Baylor (3-3, 1-2) had never won a game in Morgantown and we’re hoping to put that narrative to rest. Unfortunately for the Bears, their defense had no answer for the Mountaineers offense and too many self-imposed errors allowed West Virginia to keep the streak alive with a 43-40 victory.

With the spotlight on both programs, it provided an opportunity for sports personalities from across the country to watch the woes in Morgantown continue for Baylor.

One area where both teams improved heading into the season was at the quarterback position. Neither team entered the game with the QBs they had last season, as Gerry Bohanon (Baylor) and Jarret Doege (WVU) both hit the transfer portal after losing their position in the offseason.

Here is a look at how the new signal-callers for each squad, Blake Shapen and JT Daniels ranked within the Big 12 heading into last night according to Heartland College Sports.

5. BAYLOR QB BLAKE SHAPEN (LAST WEEK: #6) Due to others moving, I moved Shapen up a spot even after a bye week. --- 9. WEST VIRGINIA QB JT DANIELS (LAST WEEK: #9) West Virginia had a bye week, so I kept JT put at number nine for the moment.

Both quarterbacks looked the part as the game unfolded, but Shapen (14 for 22 with 326 yards and 2TD) was forced to leave the game with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter following a gruesome hit. The Bears turned to freshman Kyron Drones (7 of 14 for 95 yards and 1TD) to lead the way for the remainder of the game, which set the Twitter verse on fire.

Baylor’s defense hasn’t been as dominant this season as it was last and that was the case once more on Thursday night. The Bears gave up 500 yards of total offense to West Virginia and allowed seven third down conversions, which garnered plenty of traction on Twitter.

A lot of the chatter in the offseason revolved around the future of the Big 12 and the PAC 12, as both conferences lost teams in the realignment shuffle. Some media members have been doing their best to shift the narratives around both leagues and make it a competition about which league is better.

Thursday’s game allowed the excitement of Big 12 football to be seen across the nation, which didn’t disappoint.

One of the more entertaining things to track on Thursday night was the comparison of the scoring taking place in Morgantown compared to that in the NFL between Washington and Chicago.
