WACO, Texas – Baylor football freshman running back Richard Reese has been named the Offensive Freshman of the Year in the state of Texas, as announced by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football on Wednesday.

This marks Reese’s second Offensive Freshman of the Year award, having previously received the same honor by the Big 12 coaches. He was also named a Freshman All-American by College Football News earlier this week.

In 2022, Reese set Baylor’s program record for rushing yards by a freshman with 962 on 190 carries, surpassing Shock Linwood’s mark of 881 that stood for nine seasons. Reese averaged 5.1 yards per carry, 80.2 yards per game and ranked third nationally among freshmen in total rushing yards. The Bellville, Texas, native eclipsed the 100-yard plateau in three games, including back-to-back contests against Kansas and at Texas Tech.

The rookie running back added 14 touchdowns on the year, the most by a Bear since Linwood scored 16 times in 2014. Four times this season, Reese found the end zone multiple times in the same game, including a pair of three-TD outputs against Texas State and Texas Tech. Reese also led the Bears to four wins in games when he carried the ball 19 times or more.

Reese was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week twice this season after standout performances against Texas State and at Texas Tech. He was a three-time honorable mention selection by the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award and also earned a semifinalist nod for the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year award. Additionally, DCTF named him its Mid-Season Offensive Freshman of the Year.

Reese and the Bears (6-6) will face Air Force (9-3) in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 22 in Fort Worth. The bowl game is set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff and will be televised on ESPN.
