Gameday: Baylor vs. SMU

The Baylor Bears (1-0) will take on the SMU Mustangs (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT in a game at McLane Stadium in Waco which will be televised nationally on FS1. The Bears defeated the Mustangs last fall with a final score of 56-21. 

Baylor-SMU Series History

  • Baylor and SMU meet for the 82nd-time Saturday. The Bears lead the all-time series, 38-36-7 and 19-18-3 in Waco.
  • Last year, Baylor produced a 56-21 victory over the Mustangs in Dallas in the season-opener. BU held SMU scoreless in the second half.
  • The last time in Waco, the two teams met to open the 2014 season as well with BU shutting out SMU, 45-0, in the inaugural game at McLane Stadium.
  • The Bears have won each of the last 12 meetings dating back to 1986.
  • The previous four series meetings have all been the season opener for both teams (BU also won, 28-23, in 2005 & 59-24 in 2012).
  • The Bears and Mustangs first met on Oct. 7, 1916, with Baylor dominating in a 62-0 rout in Dallas.
  • Starting with the first meeting in 1916, the teams met each season (with the exception of World War II) through 1986, a span of 70 years. NCAA sanctions forced the cancellation of SMU’s 1987 season and University officials cancelled the Mustangs’ 1988 campaign. The teams then picked up their Southwest Conference rivalry in 1989, playing yearly until Baylor joined the Big 12 to start the 1996 season.
  • Since moving into the Big 12 Conference in 1996, Baylor is 9-0 in non-conference games against former Southwestern Conference (non-Big 12) rivals -- 5-0 vs. SMU and 4-0 vs. Rice.
  • Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will be facing his former team during Saturday’s game. Bennett was the head coach at SMU from 2002-07.

I truly think this year, he won't go 100% full speed to avoid getting injured for the NFL.

He has shown nothing that is going to get him drafted this season. In fact he has looked like crap.

If the plan is to jump he is going to have to produce.

He is easily going to get drafted in one of the first 3 rounds, most likely 2nd. He has elite of the elite speed, has great strength for his size, and he's extremely talented. Just a hot head and inconsistent.

Why do you react so strongly when somebody doesn't wear green, gold and Art all the time?

The team doesn't suck, there is definitely talent but this game didn't do much to build confidence that these guys are going to do much once the conference schedule rolls around.

I'll be over the moon with happiness if I'm wrong. All I really know how to do is work a channel changer from my chair anyway...so what do I know?

We can agree to disagree. Right now he isn't getting drafted. Damn sure not that high. He wasn't the best wr on his own field today. Guys that go that high don't have the problem much.

Good 2nd half by the defense. Only gave up 150 yards to a Chad Morris offense. Got some takeaways. Need to continue to build off of that.

Defense was overall solid. Offense ugly but the last drive with seth was pretty encouraging if we can build off of that.

Positives:

Impressed by our Defence, Redzone D especially, very encouraging, especially with arguably our best defender (Blanchard) coming back soon and missing our #1 CB for virtually the entire game

Special Teams, its just nice to be competent, it makes such a difference, bar the negated PR and Nicholson nearly muffing a punt, it was excellent, especially our Kick Off coverage, long may it continue

Williams and Hasty began to assert their ability towards the end of the game when we started creating lanes

Negatives:

OL, Pass blocking was ok (I only recall one sack and that was negated due to a penalty i think), Run Blocking was a bomb scare untill SMU got tired and the amount of False starts is just plain ridiculous

Seth, i dont know what is going on, but his Accuracy, especially on deep balls is awful and was in the Northwestern state game too, I know Deep balls arent always going to come off, but apart from the TD to Cannon (which was almost picked off) every single one was wildly under or overthrown and he wasnt under much pressure for most of them, I dont know if its rust or if its something to do with his injury, but i am concerned. On the plus side, it was nice to see him run a bit in the second half.

Dropsies, not as bad as NSU, but we had a few of them again, they were tougher catches this game, but Platt dropped a couple he could have done better with

Offensive playcalling was just really strange, I think we had 1 pass to a non-WR all game (which was negated by a penalty, of course), we kept dialling up the deep passes when Seth was clearly having trouble with them, just a really bad game by the Offence in general

Well, we have a complete rebuild on the o line and d line, a distracted staff and team and a QB who,had a terrible game. And still won big against an improving team. Not a great team but an improving one. I am most concerned about staff focus and injuries. I became too optimistic after the NW state game, even though I knew they were terrible. I am glad we have our weak non conf schedule. allows us wins and hopefully some development ....

I was lowering my win totAl expectation down to 6 or 7 at the first half but I saw enough signs of potential to improve that I think we can still be in the 8 win range. 10 wins would require our defense to play lights out and finish close games. I feel good about rice, ku and hopefully isu..osu has its own issues and ksu is not a big scoring threat. All other games will be close in the 4th but thankfully for us the big 12 looks real weak so far

Thats the saving grace. Lots of teams struggling that u expect to get it together like clemson. Big 12 looks weak so far so we are not the only ones with problems. I saw enough flashes that there is hope we can significantly improve on offense. Defense I am happy with so far.

Some things I noticed

Russell looks for Blake Lynch over all others it looked to me? Lynch will be star, already is without results yet

Kendall is depressed and that's a problem. Was worried that could happen with his youth. He needs to blame himself instead of players. He did not have his men prepped at all. The penalties are symptoms. Gonna have to push himself through this, can he? Could Russell's laced performance have been because his coach ain't right?

Frankly I've not ever noticed Russell off like this, not ever even close. I hope he got his bad game out of him!

Young WRs are awesome. Mims looks ready, love Lynch as previously mentioned

DL and OL looked like about what we worried about preseason. We shall see but that worries me now

Opportunistic defense may have returned. May be like the '13 D on turnovers?

Sideline is subdued and we aren't used to that. Briles gave us sideline activity and Grobe is the opposite. Players will have to make the mo happen on the field and that's where it should come from anyway and not the sidelines

We are very disappointed about a 40-13 game and 34(should be 35)-7 second half. This was easily worst game they've played in awhile and it was 40(should be 41)-13 vs a team being mentioned as possible new Big 12 member

D didn't seem to miss Reid too much, if any?

I'm not looking so negative at this unless they look listless vs Ok St

As Goldmine preaches on, this could end up being best team in Big 12 in what appears a down year for all Big 12s so far, save UT
