Gameday: Baylor vs. SMU

The Baylor Bears (1-0) will take on the SMU Mustangs (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT in a game at McLane Stadium in Waco which will be televised nationally on FS1. The Bears defeated the Mustangs last fall with a final score of 56-21. 

Baylor-SMU Series History

  • Baylor and SMU meet for the 82nd-time Saturday. The Bears lead the all-time series, 38-36-7 and 19-18-3 in Waco.
  • Last year, Baylor produced a 56-21 victory over the Mustangs in Dallas in the season-opener. BU held SMU scoreless in the second half.
  • The last time in Waco, the two teams met to open the 2014 season as well with BU shutting out SMU, 45-0, in the inaugural game at McLane Stadium.
  • The Bears have won each of the last 12 meetings dating back to 1986.
  • The previous four series meetings have all been the season opener for both teams (BU also won, 28-23, in 2005 & 59-24 in 2012).
  • The Bears and Mustangs first met on Oct. 7, 1916, with Baylor dominating in a 62-0 rout in Dallas.
  • Starting with the first meeting in 1916, the teams met each season (with the exception of World War II) through 1986, a span of 70 years. NCAA sanctions forced the cancellation of SMU’s 1987 season and University officials cancelled the Mustangs’ 1988 campaign. The teams then picked up their Southwest Conference rivalry in 1989, playing yearly until Baylor joined the Big 12 to start the 1996 season.
  • Since moving into the Big 12 Conference in 1996, Baylor is 9-0 in non-conference games against former Southwestern Conference (non-Big 12) rivals -- 5-0 vs. SMU and 4-0 vs. Rice.
  • Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will be facing his former team during Saturday’s game. Bennett was the head coach at SMU from 2002-07.

Obviously a lot of overreaction in this thread but at halftime, it looks like Grobe, Bennett, and the defensive staff, were ready for this week.

Should've happened 3 months ago when Morris reportedly would've jumped ship for Baylor.

The defense has looked mediocre at best. SMU shot themselves in the foot on a couple big plays

OL is everything in football, especially w/ our offense. When you replace 4 out of 5 and our returning starter leads us in penalties things aren't going to go well. It will take a few games but we'll get it together.

Been constantly on the field. Holding Morris to 6 points with an offense like Baylor is currently rolling out is super impressive.

Yeah the offensive line looks pathetic. And our senior leader Kyle Fuller leads the team in penalties these first 1.5 games.

Right. We were alesome limiting mighty SMU and their back up QB to only 240 yards in the first half. I'm sure they feel real lucky to have 6 points.

Agreed. I didn't think we would hold them to under 10 points at the half. I expected at least 35 from Seth and KB.

Because you're risking the entire program for a long shot. Half our 2016 class gone. Right now no meaningful 2017 class, and likely a lot of transfers when the season is over. The BOR is shown once again to have bungled everything. In the end, we'll probably end up with Morris anyway so this is all so stupid what we've done to ourselves. It will be a complete rebuilding job and who knows how that turns out.

If we scored 3 to 4 TDs like we typically do, the first half would look different. The offense is the issue today. Especially considering Morris is known more for offense and he has WR that care about catching the ball.
