Baylor Dominated by K-State 87-68, Drop Third Straight

MANHATTAN, Kansas -- The Bears were looking to avoid a three-game skid, but K-State (15-11, 4-9) wasn’t having any of it. Baylor (16-9, 7-6) had no answer for K-State’s offense, to go along with foul trouble and depth issues, which led to them getting blown out by the Wildcats 87-68.

K-State’s domination came across the board statistically. Four different Wildcats scored in double-figures, they shot 60.4% from the field, scored 36 points in the paint, and out-rebounded Baylor 29-24.

It was a historically bad night for Baylor’s defense, as the Wildcats became the first program to shoot 60% from the field against the Bears since Oklahoma shot 61% on January 15, 2000. Baylor also finds itself on its first three-game conference losing streak since the 2000-2001 season.

Baylor’s defense struggled to close the gap, as Kansas State spread the Bears out and took advantage of isolation ball inside the paint and elite three-point shooting in the first half. The Wildcats took a 42-33 lead into halftime following a Gabby Gregory layup as the clock expired.

Baylor struggled to maintain a first half lead, only mustering up 2:45 out in front of K-State. The Bears struggled to get any offensive consistency as a unit — 43% from the field, 23.5% from downtown — while Ja’Mee Asberry carried the load with 11 points and 2 steals at halftime.

Kansas State shot lights out from behind the arc in the first half, connecting on 7-of-15 attempts. Baylor was terrible from downtown, as they went 4-of-17, including an 0-5 performance from Sarah Andrews. Andrews was never able to get her shot rolling, finishing the night with 8 points.

Baylor needed to begin the second half more aggressively, but unfortunately, that resulted in Caitlin Bickle (4pts) picking her fourth foul at the 8:42 mark of the third quarter. Bella Fontleroy (5pts) joined Bickle with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter with her fourth foul, which was heavily contested by head coach Nicki Collen.

Following a media timeout, Collen challenged the foul on Fontleroy, which was overturned as her toe appeared to be on the line. Wasting no time on their newfound momentum, Jaden Ownes (7pts) hit a three-pointer on just her second shot attempt of the night.

The momentum would be short-lived, as Baylor continued to turn the ball over. K-State was able to put together a quick 6-0 run that forced the Bears to call a timeout down 58-42 with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Asberry finished the night as Baylor’s leading scorer with 21 points. The only other Bear to score in double figures was Darianna Littlepage-Buggs who finished the night with 16 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Bickle ultimately fouled out with 5:52 remaining in the game.

Baylor, currently sitting in fifth place of the Big 12 standings, will be back in action on Saturday, as they welcome Iowa State (16-7, 8-5) into the Ferrell Center for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
