Baylor Baseball Takes Series Opener over CSU Bakersfield, 10-3
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (18-35) defeated Cal State Bakersfield (18-29) in the series opener, 10-3, Thursday evening at Baylor Ballpark.
Despite being outhit by the Roadrunners, 8-to-6, BU totaled 16 baserunners in the victory and four of the 10 runs scored via a passed ball or wild pitch.
“We saw how many free bases they gave us through the walks and hit batters and wild pitches,” coach Mitch Thompson said after the game. “I’ll take everything we can get. It’s way better to see the other guys do it than us.”
Out of the bullpen, junior righty Grant Golomb tossed five scoreless frames and struck out five batters. In his last four outings, Golomb has not surrendered an earned run.
“It’s definitely something to build off of … and something to hang the cleats up on going into the summer,” Golomb said of his five-shutout innings.
The Bears got out to a quick start and put two runs on the board in the first inning without recording a hit.
CSUB’s starter, Ryan Verdugo, walked three of the first four batters he faced. A passed ball scored sophomore 3B Hunter Teplanszky from third base and redshirt freshman Gavin Brzozowski lined an RBI sacrifice fly into center field to score freshman SS Kolby Branch.
With runners in scoring position in the second, Teplanszky grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice, and Branch followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to extend Baylor’s lead to 4-2.
In the 14th and final start of his sophomore campaign, Mason Marriott surrendered three earned runs, seven hits and issued two walks in four innings pitched. His ERA rests at 7.52 to finish the season.
The Bears broke open the game with three runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh thanks in part to bad defense from CSUB — three of the runs scored via wild pitches. Sophomore C Cort Castle also added a two-run single in the frame.
Final: Baylor 10 - Cal State Bakersfield 3
W: Grant Golomb (3-3) L: Ryan Verdugo (4-7)
POTG: Grant Golomb 5 IP, H, 2 BB, 5 K, 62 pitches
