An outhouse left uncleaned for a year doesn't reek like this past season does. Hard to expect the guys to take that and expect next year to be better, speaks well for the leaders that so many are willing to rebuild.
Baylor Baseball: Caley, Polk, Neumann, Medellin Enter Transfer Portal
WACO, Texas – Four Baylor baseball players entered their names into the transfer portal Wednesday, according to D1Baseball’s Transfer Tracker.
On the heels of a disappointing year in which the Bears lost a program record 35 games and missed the Big 12 Tournament for the first time ever, it was expected that attrition would be taking place.
Of the 37 players eligible to return for the 2024 season, it was noted last week that around a third of the roster would not return next year.
The four names who entered Wednesday were LHP Cam Caley (Jr.), 1B/DH Casen Neumann (So.), C/DH Walker Polk (Fr.) and INF Jordan Medellin (Fr.).
Caley tossed the third most innings on the team (49) and started nine games but had an 8.63 ERA and opposing batters hit .319 against him.
Neumann, after a promising freshman season in 2022, recorded 22 strikeouts and four hits in 37 at-bats this year.
Polk started 14 games, hit three home runs in 49 at-bats and finished the year with a .224 batting average and a .356 on-base percentage.
Medellin missed a good portion of the beginning of the season with an injury and never registered an at-bat after returning.
In 2024, college baseball rosters will be expanded to 40, and there is expected to be competition in the fall again.
The 2023 recruiting class features 12 freshmen and seven JUCO transfers. It’s yet to be seen what coach Mitch Thompson and his staff will bring in via the portal this summer, but pitching should be a top priority.
