Baylor MBB Lands Toledo Guard and MAC Player of the Year RayJ Dennis
RayJ Dennis, the top rated guard in the transfer portal, has committed to play his final season of college basketball at Baylor over offers from Illinois, Indiana, Utah, and Michigan.
A rising senior in the transfer portal from Toledo, Dennis is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound point guard from Plainfield, Illinois. He boasts a 6-foot-7 wingspan along with his unanimous 2022-23 MAC Player of the Year award among other accolades.
Dennis was a finalist for the Lute Olson National Player of Year Award as well as the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of Year Award. He ranked 10th nationally with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio and ranked 14th nationally with 5.8 assists per game.
Dennis’ overall stat line is similarly impressive with an average of 19.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 made threes per game in 33.9 minutes per game. His shooting percentages were solid with 48.4% from the field, 36.6% from three and 76.9 % from the free throw line.
Advance stats from KenPom.com also look very positively on Dennis. He had an offensive rating of 119.2 last season on a 28.7% usage rate. He had an effective field goal percentage of 52.9% and a true shooting percentage of 55.8% with a turnover rate of 11.5 (the percentage of personal possessions ending in a turnover).
As a junior, he posted 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 50.3% from the floor and 32.1% from three-point range.
Dennis will give Baylor an immediate replacement for Adam Flagler at the point guard position and a potential All-Big 12 type talent.
