Baylor Defensive Back AJ McCarty Enters the Transfer Portal

Baylor defensive back A.J. McCarty entered the transfer portal on Monday, making the announcement via social media. 

A redshirt junior, McCarty was originally a three-star signee in the 2020 recruiting class under former head coach Matt Rhule, choosing Baylor over Tulsa.

Upon arriving, the Brownwood native maintained his redshirt but saw special teams reps in the final three games of the tumultuous 2020 COVID season. In 2021, he saw time in 13 games during the 12-2 Big 12 Championship run, including a tackle in the Sugar Bowl victory over Ole Miss.

Last year, McCarty appeared in all 13 games, including two starts at cornerback, compiling 37 tackles, one TFL, three pass breakups, and a crucial 18-yard pick-six that sealed a decisive win over Texas Tech in Lubbock.

Speaking of which, the Red Raiders were the first to offer McCarty shortly after his decision became public.

After making a position switch during the spring, McCarty was expected to fill the “Star” position on next year’s defense. Instead, the Bears will continue hunting for more secondary help as the season looms just around the corner.

The timing is surprising, at least for those of us on the outside looking in. Behind the scenes, that was a different story to some degree, but no matter, a spot has opened, and McCarty’s days suiting up in Baylor green and gold has ended.

I used to have a membership until I got fed up with paying to read someone tote the company line and have any sort of take that goes against the grain be met with comments like yours. Pay me your 13 bucks a month and I will re-create anything you see on that premium board. Nate Bennett is the next Peyton Manning, that 4 star quarterback we just got that's a TCU legacy is definitely going to sign with us. There you go, I just gave you a free trial

DDo things not really pass the smell test here to anyone else? This guy enters the portal at 7:42 pm is committed to Tech at 7:49 pm the same day? Did I read that right? If so it appears our program is being illegally recruited by Tech. I realize there are ways to make it appear not so but the bottom line this looks fishy and there have been other instances like this over the past year and a half or so.

Is he committed to Tech or did he just receive an offer from Tech? His tweet indicated that he had received an offer - not committed.

I could see this happening if either he lost his starting job or if Baylor wasn't competitive with NIL. We all have to remember that Baylor is rolling out a new DC/Defensive scheme, so we cannot carry over our understanding from 2022 to 2023 in regard to the defense.

he received an offer from tech, not committed. he also entered the portal earlier than that in the day. That is just when he tweeted out his own announcement on social media.

I don't think I'm ever going to figure out the transfer portal timing rules. I thought the portal closed on April 30th. Apparently there are other rules, exceptions that I don't understand.

Seems like there aren't really any rules that everyone is a free agent all the time now.

u can enter anytime. The window that you are thinking of is to transfer and be eligible immediately. He is gonna need a waiver from ncaa if he wants to try and play this season since he entered after the deadline

That fix looked like it was in the moment he entered the portal. But someone said the guy got kicked off our team? Why? If true, I'm sure MCGuire can't claim ignorance about it if this back fires in Lubbock.
