Alfonzo Allen Tabbed to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List
ATLANTA, Ga. – Baylor sophomore safety Alfonzo Allen has been named to the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, as announced Thursday by the Wuerffel Foundation.
Allen is one of 110 candidates nominated for this year’s award, which honors student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society. The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service.
In his time away from the football field, Allen has volunteered with No Limitations – A Special Needs Sports Ministry and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and also went on a mission trip to Louisiana with Baylor Athletics.
The Miami, Fla., native played in all 13 games during his true freshman season last year with the Bears and logged significant time on special teams. He made three tackles, including two for loss, as a reserve at the STAR position. Allen’s first-career stop was a sack in the 2022 season opener against UAlbany.
Semifinalists for the Wuerffel Trophy will be announced on Nov. 2, and finalists will be revealed on Nov. 28. The formal announcement of the 2023 recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 7 or 8 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN. The presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will take place on Feb. 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.
As in years past, the winner of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will be invited to join Wuerffel in New York City to attend the Heisman Trophy ceremonies, including the press conference, televised announcement show, and the gala.
