There are really two major types of spread offenses: spread-to-run teams, and spread-to-pass. There often is quite a bit of schematic overlap between them, and so the difference lies in the emphasis and philosophy of the offensive coordinator.
Art Briles is probably the ultimate example of a spread-to-pass offensive mind; yeah, he’d run the ball 40 times if you gave him good numbers, but when his head hit the pillow at night he was dreaming of bombing the ball downfield.
