Rhule vague on status of junior RB Terence Williams

Baylor's lead rusher in 2016, Terence Williams was limited throughout spring practice and summer and has yet to put on the pads in fall camp. There was speculation that Williams could be out until the Bears took the field against Kansas State on Sept. 30.

On Wednesday, Baylor head coach Matt Rhule left all speculation open regarding the status of Williams and a possible timeline for his return.

"I don’t know how long," Rhule said "There was a talk of maybe him being back for Oklahoma, maybe it being after, maybe even being before. I’ve kind of always in my mind said, ‘Hey, maybe we can have him back for Kansas State,’ knowing in rehab it can be going really well and have a setback."

Williams, along with sophomore JaMycal Hasty, was set to highlight Baylor's backfield during the 2017 season after the Bears lost senior Shock Linwood following the 2016 season. Now it looks to be down to Hasty and a group of true freshmen until Williams can return to the field.

"All I’ve told him is try to get yourself back as soon as you possibly can," Rhule said.

Whenever that is, Williams is expected to put himself back in the mix as the lead back due to his focus on learning the new offense even during the recovery process.

"The thing I’ve liked about [what] Terence has done, he’s been very mentally engaged in what we’re doing," Rhule said. "We do a lot of walk throughs at night. He does all that stuff, takes reps. So I’ve been pleased with his attention to details in terms of things."

Williams rushed for 1,048 yards and 11 touchdowns on 185 carries as a sophomore.

This looks like an injury that could go deep into the season.

How it's being handled makes me wonder if he's okay again.

Yep, it does not sound good. Might just prepare for a medical redshirt now.

Hope he comes back for at least KSU and beyond. He's really the only eligible power back on the roster this season and you need at least one of those in a conference like the Big 12.

Can't believe he is still out

Dru Dixon at 6-1 240 is performing well in practice. He's not as fast as Terence Williams, but he is a power back.

With junior Terence Williams expected to miss at least the first three games with a shoulder injury, sophomore JaMycal Hasty has a chance to be the featured running back. But true freshmen Dru Dixon, Trestan Ebner and John Lovett have a shot to play.

"JaMycal was way ahead of them and what you see those guys doing, they're just catching him," Rhule said. "That doesn't mean he's not doing well. I think we're a little NFL minded in that we're going to have a third-down back probably sometimes. I'd love to have one back get 20 carries and the other 10 or 12, and have another guy be a short yardage back."

Lovett rushed for 1,371 yards as a senior last season for Cherokee High School in Burlington, N.J. Ebner is a converted receiver from Henderson, Texas, while Dixon is a walk-on from Air Force Prep School in Colorado.
The 6-1, 230-pound Dixon has been one of the biggest surprises in camp as he's impressed the Baylor coaches with his bulldozing running style.

"He's a big, physical Mike Alstott type of guy who can play fullback or tailback," Rhule said. "To me every time we give him an opportunity he makes something happen. We put him in with the 3's he runs somebody over, put him in with the 2's he runs somebody over, put him with the 1's he runs somebody over."

Not very decisive there. If Hasty can catch the ball out of the backfield I think he could be another Preston Pearson (now there's a blast from the past) but with more speed.

"Williams sat out most of the spring camp with shoulder issues, and underwent surgery this spring. It was an injury that slowed him down at times during the 2016 season. "

Shoulder injuries IMHO are the worst you can have as a football player. I separated my left shoulder my sophomore year in high school, and it bothered me throughout my high school and extremely brief college career. I've had six shoulder surgeries after football, and only one of them worked for a few years.

Shoulders by nature of their anatomy, are very vulnerable to injury in contact sports like football. We need to pray that the coaching staff will not rush him back, and also pray that Mr. Williams' body heals well.

Our players must be recovering slower since they don't have all those roads like Briles would give them (sarcasm)
