Chances are he did that because RJ can throw farther than Sawyer. A Hail Mary from the minus-45 requires about a 60-yard throw to get it to the end zone. You're going to get the guy with the best chance of making that throw on the field.

No way between grimes and aranda they figured that out. Not a chance.

I agree, and was saying the same thing at the TV. The MOST important play of the game.

But then the logic hit.....of course, THAT is so Grimes and Aranda this season. Completely comical and embarrassingly bad coaching decisions.

The most important play was any of the downs on West Virginia's game-winning drive. When you're to the point of needing a 55-yard Hail Mary, the game's already over.

Don't argue with me. It WAS the most important play of the game at its time. And putting in the cold 3rd string QB for the throw was idiotic....at best. At its worst, it was Grimes shooting both middle fingers at Baylor administration and fans.

Every play IS the most important play of the game at its time.

The odds of hitting a 55-yard Hail Mary are astronomically low. They're even lower with a QB who can't get the ball to the goal line.

With so many legitimate opportunities to second guess Grimes and Aranda, this is a silly hill to die on. The game was lost long before that play.

The game was lost when Grimes and Aranda coached for a FG (and 7 point lead) on that 2nd/3rd and 11 with the ball on the 15 (2nd to last possession).

The point is that putting in your cold 3rd string QB for your last (hail mary) chance is idiotic.

Sawyer should have punched Grimes in the face when he told him the plan. Dave is a loser for letting that happen.
The plan was to essentially take a knee and not show an ounce of fight when it mattered most. The staff had one last chance to impress me, and this is what they did.

Go for broke, man! Playing with passion and desperation is what caused the comeback. Why stop with a minute left? The season was already a lost cause.

If your third-stringer is the only quarterback you have that can get the ball to the goal line, it makes sense to put him in. A Hail Mary pass that dies at the 5 or 10 equals game over.

I agree with your first point, though. We got really conservative every time we got in the red zone and played for field goals with an unreliable kicker. That's a good way to lose a game.

Maybe. But that 3rd string QB is better than our 2. That 3rd string broke HS records previously held by 2 different Heisman winners. RJ had the misfortune of playing for Anthony Wood in Austin. The one 6A coach who refuses to return calls from recruiting coaches.
Too bad.

Just like our 3rd string running back. Dave Aranda is unqualified to evaluate football players.

I'm confident the great majority of P5 quarterbacks can throw the ball 60 yards on a Hail Mary when they don't have a particular target and can get a bit of a running start. It was stupid to put someone in who hadn't played and with no with no warm up. The most important thing is to have a feel for the game to put yourself in a position to get that running start.

The odds were obviously very long, but made longer by putting a cold qb in. Hopefully the last in a long line of stupid decisions.

What RJ Martinez did in high school doesn't mean a whole lot. What matters more is his more recent track record, which is a middling record at the FCS level.

Sawyer Robertson was a damn good high school quarterback too. And he just put together a great game against a winning FBS team. He played well enough to win that game. Our defense and kicker let him down.

Then your confidence is misplaced. 60 yards is a long damn way.

I didn't even realize we put a 3rd stringer in. What a bad move. The fact that he didn't get a throw off sort of defeats any argument for the idea. Stick with your guy and maybe he gets a throw off, I dunno.

Hail Mary is synonymous with sliver of a hope so it's not like putting in a cold 3rd stringer for the Hail Mary was really accomplishing much other than putting in a cold 3rd stringer, which, I mean, just hilarious.

There is not a better way to yell "I'm a bad coach who can retire after being paid millions" than a giant middle finger to our quarterback and fanbase on the final play of a horrific season, but then I remember this is the guy who fired the quarterback of our greatest season ever, so par for the dumpsterfire hellhole of a course.

As other posters have said, that original Sugar Bowl team must have had serious studs to get past this level of ineptitude. Another sincere thank you to them, what a team.

Most can throw it 60 yards especially when they aren't throwing at a particular target.

There's no rule that says you have to throw it in the end zone. The best "hail mary" I ever saw was a 10 yard toss to Tyreek Hill with a line of blockers ahead of them that went about 60 for a TD.

They can if they take a running start without any pass rush. The number of college players who can off a deep drop with three or more pass-rushers is excessively low.

You don't have to get it to the end zone, but all catches in the end zone are touchdowns. Most dying quails to the 5 or 10 either hit the turf or get caught by a leaping player who is tackled immediately to the turf.

I disagree. There're more important plays in the game that could have more likely swung the outcome of the game besides a Hail Mary

Sorry, I disagree. The last play had a low probability of success. The game was lost earlier. Inserting someone with greater arm strength was the right move

Y'all are discounting our piss poor OL on that last play.

Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite couldn't have gotten that pass off with our line.

West Virginia was smart. They sent five or six rushers on that play, knowing that they'd put pressure on the QB before the receivers could get 55 yards downfield. More teams should do that in that situation.

Well they should have been talking about picking up the extra rushers if they rushed more than 3. Instead they out smarted themselves by putting in a qb who hadn't played a down.

This is a silly discussion, because it almost certainly didn't make any difference, but the bottom line is it was a typical stupid decision pulling Robertson in that situation. Just more evidence.

That logic didn't hold for Drones. He is 4 times the QB Robertson is and we were told not worth losing sleep over.

Sawyer had a grand total of 11 passing attempts in games at MIss State in a totally different system and style of play before he transferred to Baylor. He's had 117 total attempts at Baylor behind a porous OL and thrust into action with very little game experience.

I don't think it's fair to judge him as a flop at this point, any more than it was for Drones when so many here were claiming he would never succeed after he left Baylor.

Yep. And Sawyer was great last night. If that was a preview of what's to come, he'll end up being a better college quarterback than Drones, who is still pretty limited as a passer.

Drones is in a good situation for him. I'm happy for him. But the only game we lost because of quarterback play this season was the Utah game. Every other game was lost on the line of scrimmage.
