BREAKING: Baylor to hire Cal's Jake Spavital as its next offensive coordinator
Baylor is set to hire California offensive coordinator Jake Spavital to the same position, a source has told SicEm365. Spavital spent the 2023 season with the Golden Bears after four years as the head coach at Texas State.
Spavital will replace former Bayor OC Jeff Grimes, who was fired following the 2023 Baylor football season. A key driver behind the decision was an emphasis on getting the Bears back to a spread-tempo offense.
The 38-year-old Spavital has been an on-field assistant at the FBS level dating back to the 2011 season at West Virginia, where he coached quarterbacks under former head coach Dana Holgorsen. He spent two seasons with the Mountaineers.
Spavital was then hired as Texas A&M’s co-offensive coordinator for the 2013 season before being promoted to OC and quarterbacks coach for 2014-2015. In 2016, Spavital made his first stop as offensive coordinator at Cal under Sonny Dykes, and then returned back to West Virginia under Holgorsen in the same position for the 2017-2018 seasons.
Texas State hired Spavital as its head coach in 2019, and he spent four seasons there before being fired after the 2022 campaign. Spavital posted a 13-35 overall record with the Bobcats in his time there.
