BREAKING: Baylor set to hire Khenon Hall as its next RB coach

Baylor is set to hire Khenon Hall, currently the running backs coach and running back coordinator at SMU, as its next running backs coach. Hall will also receive the associate head coach title. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.

Hall joined the SMU program for the 2022 season after serving as the running backs coach at Texas Southern (2021) and Illinois State. Hall was at Illinois State for seven seasons and served his alma mater in multiple positions, including running backs coach, recruiting coordinator and ultimately assistant head coach in charge of player personnel.

Known as an up-and-coming recruiter in the industry, Hall played a significant role in SMU landing one four-star prospect in SMU’s 2024 class athlete Derrick McFall (Tyler High) and three in the 2025 class, including quarterback Keelon Russell (Duncanville), running back Rickey Stewart (Chapel Hill), and athlete Demetrius Brisbon (Chapel Hill).

At SMU, Hall’s running back room helped the Mustangs to national rankings of seventh in red zone offense, 12th in scoring offense and 14th in total offense. The Mustangs’ 331 first downs set a program record, while the 1,005 total plays rank second. The 2022 squad also posted top-three program marks in scoring (3rd, 484) and total offense (3rd, 6147).

Hall is a graduate of South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas.

Well for a guy to leave the same job at SMU with a staff that looks like it will be there a while and headed to a power conference and alleged great NIL , this is good. It appears Aranda is a better talker than I thought and perhaps our NIL is also really turning around.

Derrick McFall shows in the 24 class. Maybe he'll switch his commitment. He had offers from Alabama, UCLA and Ark

Unless we're going around in circles.......

Though this does look like a pretty good hire.

Appears to be a good hire. Appears to be a + for Baylor NIL but we will see. A Texas connection coach and recruiter which we have been missing since Joey and Blanchard left. This could be a real positive.

Key part of the article: Hall will also receive the associate head coach title

He may still be coaching RB but the title brings more money and leverage. Glad we got him

What sucks is that no one thought to hire a coach or additional personnel to be the cheerleader and keep the Tx recruiting pipe line strong until AFTER the fact. With Joey and some other coaches gone Mack or Dave didn't say hmmmmmm we need some on just like them to keep this ship moving forward

Something tells me that they were banking on the Bell family
and their Tx high school football connections. Of course we see where that got us. The administration should have known better if that was the case. Then again it is Baylor sooo……

Aranda is not a quick learner. I appreciate that he generally recognizes his mistakes and generally makes reasonable moves to correct those mistakes, but they're always like a year too late. He also replaced Joey, probably the best recruiter in the state, with a random grad assistant.

Rhule hired Bell as a "unite the fanbase" kind of hire". Decent high school football coach, but there were/are better high school coaches to consider. I also think that there are some big money folks that were involved in Aranda's decision to retain him

I tell you one thing about Bell, he really wore out his welcome with us in CS

If your were a teenager would Bell seem like someone you could relate to, because in the surface I'm saying no. It's like me as an husband and father trying to hang out with a but on bachelors. We just don't have much in common

Doesn't led to questions of WHY? Why would he leave SMU based on what you list as all the right reasons to stay...

Well it is anecdotal evidence our program may just be in better shape and has perhaps more things going for it than posters here know about including me.

CDA is lost. He's not a headcoach. He just plays one on TV.

We are great at everything except actually winning games, and that doesn't take speculation or clairvoyance to figure out

The proof will be in the pudding next season. We'll either win games or we won't.

But I have no problem saying I've been pleasantly surprised by how this offseason has played out so far.

I went from having no hope for 2024 to seeing a path back to competitive respectability. We still have to take that path and do it, and I still have my doubts that Aranda can or will right the ship. But this offseason hasn't been the ****show many forecasted.

SMU is throwing money around and joining the ACC... Why did they let this guy go to us?

I'm suspect we are paying more.

But in the scheme of counter offers and negotiations... SMU obviously thought he wasn't worth them digging into their endless bag of money for

Since we offered him the title of Assnt Head Coach, maybe he thinks he could be Baylor next head coach??

I mean it's clear the guy is aiming for Head Coach. Baylor offered something SMU couldn't which is associate head coach as they already have that role filled. Money likely couldn't have kept him there, at least not any that a school would be willing to pay a RB coach.

Of course I'm not pretending to know the full dynamics and whether he's worth it or not, but from a superficial stand point this is what seems to be the case.
