Gameday Thread: No. 6 Baylor vs. No. 23 TCU

WACO, Texas – The No. 6 Baylor women’s basketball team makes its Foster Pavilion debut on Wednesday when it hosts No. 23 TCU.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are still available for the contest.

The game is available for streaming via Big 12 Now on ESPN+. A live radio broadcast will be available on ESPN Central Texas (1660 AM/92.3 FM) and live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter and live stats.

STARTING FIVE

Baylor and TCU are two of seven undefeated teams in Division I women’s basketball, and West Virginia joins the two programs of three unbeaten teams in the Big 12.

With its win over then-No. 5 Texas on Saturday, Baylor became just the second program in the country to record two top-five wins this season after taking down No. 4 Utah on Nov. 14. NC State has a pair of wins from November over then-No. 2 UConn and No. 3 Colorado.

A win on Wednesday would push the Bears to 13-0 on the year, matching their best start to a season since the 2015-16 campaign. Baylor finished that season 36-2 with a trip to the Elite Eight.

In Baylor’s 12 wins this year, the Bears have held their opponents to their lowest scoring output six times and an additional four teams to their second-lowest scoring outputs.

Baylor has never trailed at halftime this season and the Bears are 57-4 with Nicki Collen at the helm when leading at the intermission.

SCOUTING THE SERIES WITH THE HORNED FROGS

Baylor leads the all-time series with TCU, 47-5, and the Bears are 22-2 in Waco. Since TCU joined the Big 12 ahead of the 2012-13 season, the Bears have swept the series with the Horned Frogs every year and have won 35-straight games dating back to the 1989-90 campaign. The Bears have not lost a game at home against the Horned Frogs since Jan. 27, 1990.

LAST TIME OUT VS. TCU

Baylor used a 67-57 win on Feb. 22, 2023, to snap a four-game losing streak. With the victory, the Bears swept the two-game series with the Horned Frogs. For just the second time during league play, five Bears reached double figures led by Bella Fontleroy’s 14 points. Darianna Littlepage-Buggs registered a game-high 14 rebounds, recording her 13th double-double of the season, and ninth in Big 12 action. Her nine double-doubles were the most by a BU rookie dating back to at least the 2009-10 season.

PROMOTIONS

There are several promotions scheduled for Wednesday’s game, including a commemorative coin giveaway and student T-shirt collector item giveaway. At halftime, Red Panda will be performing and all fans can enter a contest for the $50,000 half-court shot contest.

Curious. I've seen that Big 12 video many times and here inside the Foster it seems they edited out Britney Griner.

So far we are intimidated by Prince parked under the basket. Neither team shooting worth a darn so far.
I actually think the opposite. DLP doesn't look intimidated, she's just forcing shots that aren't gonna go over Prince. Walker and Bella have shown how to get in the paint and away from Prince.
Again, our game plan can't be DLB trying to go over Prince

OK, this is good mojo. We won both games (men and women) to open a new arena.

We really cleaned up our passing
And got hot from 3

They are well below their average on 3 point shooting. I have to think our defense is at least partially responsible for that.

Is it just me or did they zoom in the camera a little more tonight? It doesn't look as severe as it did last night. Or, maybe it's just my bad eyes!

Isn't one of their negatives is they aren't very deep? That will wear a team out late in a game.

I thought they had depth issues. Clearly we have great depth.

What a great second half, especially the last 16 minutes. Great adjustments at the half. Congrats to CNC and the whole team on another convincing victory over a ranked team! This team is built for March madness!

I think our quick way of playing and running the court really tired them out. Prince is just better than I thought.

Let's go undefeated.

Their hot 3-pt shooter, Conner, went 0-6 tonight.

Our defense was stiffling, especially in the second half.

So many important achievements tonight.

  • Big that we were down at half and gathered, adjusted, and battled through it. We need to build confidence that we can battle through adversity. We struggled in the 1st half, looking tentative, and allowing Prince to alter too many shots. We were more decisive in the 2nd.
  • Big that we took on a gifted 6'7" player and held her at 21 points. It's amazing how well we've competed against some very talented bigs so far this year.
  • Big that we held Conner to 0-6 from 3 point line. She's shooting 43% for season.
  • Big that we got points from a variety of players. Let's hear it for small ball!! Bella, Sarah, Yaya, and Jada scored 57 of our 71, on a night when we really needed Dree, Darianna, and Aijha to provide defense and rebounds. It will be important as we get through conference and head to tournament play to know that we have many options in a balanced offense if someone is having a tough night.
  • Big that we outrebounded them 39-34.
  • Big that we have a bench (although I'd prefer to rely on it for a few more minutes each game). They played Prince, Owens, and Conner for 40, 40, and 38. It really felt that we had more energy and burst in the 2nd half.
  • Big that we got through the emotional hurdles of competing after the UT game, and opening the Foster.

Open the foster and shoot 100% from the free throw line... I will take it!!
