Baylor MBB Lands 5-Star Wing and Top 5 Overall Prospect VJ Edgecombe
VJ Edgecombe, arguably the top wing in the 2024 class, gives his verbal pledge to Baylor over Duke and Kentucky. The 6-5 Edgecombe from Long Island Lutheran is part of a recruiting class that includes an elite point guard in 6-1 Robert Wright from Montverde, a 5-star big wing in 6-9 Jason Asemota from Hillcrest Prep and a seven-footer in Noah Boyed from McCook Community College.
Edgecombe, Wright, and Asemota are all top 10 recruits in Baylor basketball history, which makes this 2024 class the top recruiting class for the Bears all-time. Edgecombe is an explosive athlete who should be a perfect fit for Baylor’s system. He has a 6-foot-9 wingspan, over a 40-inch vertical, plays good defense, and makes over 40% of his 3-point attempts.
How He Fits?
The two targets for the Bears to replace freshman phenom Ja’Kobe Walter, a likely NBA lottery pick, have been Tre Johnson and VJ Edgecombe. Johnson committed to Texas over Baylor in November which ended up being fine since Edgecombe always seemed like the better culture fit for the Bears.
On the court, he’s been described as an explosive wing who doesn’t need to be ball-dominant and cares about defense as much as offense. Off the court, he’s a connector and leader who has a lot of similarities to former Bears like Jared Butler and Ish Wainright.
The addition of Edgecombe gives the Bears a top-five recruiting class in 2024.
