Gameday Thread: No. 21 Baylor at No. 23 Oklahoma

WACO, Texas – The No. 21 Baylor women’s basketball team plays is second-straight game against a ranked opponent when it travels to face No. 23 Oklahoma on Wednesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and the game is available for streaming via the Big 12 Now on ESPN+.  A live radio broadcast will be available on ESPN Central Texas (1660 AM/92.3 FM) and live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter and live stats.

STARTING FIVE

Sophomore Darianna Littlepage-Buggs averaged a double-double (15 pts, 11 reb) last week after posting back-to-back double-doubles at BYU and against No. 22 West Virginia.

Baylor picked up its conference-leading fifth top-25 win of the season on Saturday afternoon, besting the Mountaineers, 65-58.

Wednesday’s contest against No. 23 Oklahoma marks the eighth game against a ranked opponent for the Bears. Baylor is 5-2 against teams in the top-25 this year.

The Sooners and the Bears rank first and second, respectively, in the Big 12 in assists per game at 20.4 and 19.6 assists per contest, respectively.

Senior Sarah Andrews has 218 career 3-pointers and needs 43 more to break Odyssey Sim’s record of 258. The senior guard has hit at least one from range in all but two contests this season.

SCOUTING THE SERIES WITH OKLAHOMA

Baylor holds the slim 34-28 advantage in the all-time series with Oklahoma and the Bears are 16-12 in Norman. The Bears and the Sooners split the series last season as each team picked up a road win. In Baylor’s win in Norman on Jan. 3, 2023, Sarah Andrews dropped a career-high 30 points against the then-No. 17 Sooners, going 5-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc and a career-best 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Oklahoma has won three of the last five meetings between the two programs, breaking a 12-game win streak by the Bears during the 2021-22 season.

i like our offense,we do the Globetrotter weave 3 times then drive to the basket with our head down , no pick and roll , no kickout for an open 3, just drive like a bull in a china shop and either get shot blocked or turnover...and we're not playing the ny generals either...

Not sure what they are. I was a big CNC supporter for the first 2 1/2 years. This sudden collapse is on her in my opinion. While I suspect she gets at least one more year, I would support getting rid of her at the end of this season unless there is a dramatic turnaround. The product we have gotten since UT in Austin is not acceptable.

So, we are supposed to be happy being a single digit seed? That's not exactly a high bar. I am perplexed by the coaching decisions. No better than we are playing, why not give Jana, Fritz, etc. more playing time to see if they can spark something.

When you have a pro coach who doesn't adapt to the talent. We have you get these results. Just like last year. Just like getting blown out 3 years ago by Dakota.

Glad to see Jana playing extended minutes. Her attitude is a breath of fresh air for a team that is often playing as silos and not together. I liked the way she pulled Yaya away from Ref J after he called Yaya for getting in the way of an out of control OU player. The 9-0 run was sparked by her determination to play smart.

A bit smarter play by her team members will be welcome. Also, hitting the little rectangle when shooting a layup often produces better results than merely hitting outside the small rectangle. Two handed passing (Sara) will usually reduce the passing turnovers.

We are not a Top 25 team. To be honest, and this coming from a fan, I'm not sure we are a tournament team. There are only 36 at large teams. Not sure we make the cut. My high school team was playing better than CNC's Baylor lead team. Littlepage-Buggs and Edwards have regressed over the season. And don't get me started with Andrews. She would have been benched on most Top 25 teams. The lack of development would have me cancelling my Baylor visit. It's simply hard to ignore.

We used to pick and roll. But it's one dimensional. Teams can learn to block that and force you to your second option. We don't have a second option. CNC was coach of the year in the WNBA on inherited talent. She has never proven herself as a recruiter or a developer but she got one of the most marque jobs at the time. Why? Financial benefits. You get what you pay for. Baylor earned this. Makes it difficult to be a fan.

How does she explain it in the post game press conference? Does she justify it with smart basketball talk? A great assistant, do not feel she has the knacks for a head coaching job. The entire staff is a joke.

She struggles as a college coach. All we heard by CNC fans was wait till she hearts her players. Well, outside Sarah they are hers. Oh, where are the people saying if we had Blackwell and Edwards it would have been different, well they are here and zero difference.

Blame the players, yes. But, who designed the team? Who has set the offense and defense? Who allows stuff to happen? Who makes in game calls? Who runs practice? Who game preps?

3 years. Different players. Same exact issues. Who is the problem?


Nice person. Not a good college coach. Unless middle of the pack is the goal

The program has been in a nose dive since KM's players departed.

She reminds me of Aranda, actually. She can do really well with someone else's players on an established and winning team. But sustain it? Pfft

Making the tournament and being a tournament team are entirely different. We're likely an 8/9, possibly a ten.

100 percent. Some are just mediocre coaches. She is in the college ranks. Good person. Stands up and answers questions. 2 years with her team. And 6 place. Beautiful.
