Baylor Baseball Shut Out and Smacked by Houston in Saturday Contest, 8-0
HOUSTON – Baylor baseball (4-10, 0-2) dropped its third straight contest and second conference game with a 8-0 shutout loss to Houston (10-4, 2-0) on Saturday night at Schroeder Park.
In the defeat, the Cougars outhit Baylor just 7-to-5. The story of the game, however, was BU’s pitching staff allowing two home runs and issuing 10 free passes in comparison to UH, who handed out only three walks.
Baylor’s lineup combined for 15 strikeouts and its woes with runners in scoring position continued, going 0-for-8 and 2-for-13 with runners on in Saturday’s loss.
In his fourth career start, right-handed pitcher Collin McKinney (RFr.) struggled to find the strike zone consistently. Houston added runs in each of the first and third innings after McKinney issued free passes who eventually came around to score.
In the fourth, former Bear and current UH center fielder Jacob Schoenvogel (Sr.) lined a two-run homer over the right field wall to extend the Cougars lead to 4-0. The home run was his first long ball off the the season.
McKinney’s day was finished after walking three and allowing four hits and four earned runs across 3.2 innings pitched.
Out of the bullpen, veteran lefty Kobe Andrade (Sr.) threw two scoreless frames before surrendering a solo home run and issuing a walk in the seventh. Right-handed pitcher Jared Matheson (Sr.) entered in relief of Andrade and the Cougars extended their lead to 8-0.
